Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola voiced cautious optimism following the weekend's stunning preseason defeat to Leeds United, saying he hopes right back Jeremie Frimpong has not suffered an injury setback.
Frimpong, who has endured a troublesome injury history since arriving at Liverpool last summer, was substituted 77 minutes into the 4–2 defeat at Soldier Field in Chicago.
A youthful Reds side had been in control at 2–0 up at the break, but shipped four goals in the closing 30 minutes to surrender the game. Liverpool conceded twice in just seven minutes after Frimpong's withdrawal when the score stood at 3–2, before Leeds added a fourth late on.
Iraola disclosed to LFCTV that Frimpong "asked for the sub."
Nevertheless, he remained upbeat that the problem is minor: "I don't think it's an injury. It was just some overload and I hope he's not injured in that way. I don't think we've lost anyone."
Having wrapped up a three-game tour of the United States — with victories over Sunderland and Wrexham in Nashville and New York respectively — Liverpool now head back to England. The next preseason fixture is scheduled at Anfield against Monaco on Aug. 9, followed by a double header against Como on Aug. 16, with the first of those games played behind closed doors.
Only time will tell how much Frimpong's "overload" issue will impact his availability and whether he will be forced to sit out any upcoming fixtures.
Jeremie Frimpong's Frustrating Liverpool Injury Record

The Dutch full back was considered an astute acquisition last summer, signed on the strength of several impressive campaigns in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen — particularly as an attack-minded successor to Trent Alexander-Arnold following his move to Real Madrid. However, he was plagued by hamstring problems throughout 2025–26, even limping off during his debut against Bournemouth.
Frimpong missed a total of 20 club matches due to hamstring and muscular complaints. His injury record since joining Liverpool stands in sharp contrast to the rest of his career, during which he missed just 11 games for club and country across the previous six seasons.
Liverpool's Right Back Headache Continues

Frimpong's recurring fitness issues, combined with Conor Bradley's knee surgery following a freak fall in a clash with Arsenal in January, made last season a challenging one at right back — and those difficulties show little sign of easing.
Bradley has been travelling with the squad in America as he continues his personal rehabilitation programme, but a return to first-team action is not expected in the near future. In late July, Iraola suggested that the Northern Ireland international, ahead of Frimpong, remains his preferred right back option when fully fit.
"I think it is a situation that is tricky because we trust Conor in the long term, we know we want him to be our right back," the manager said. "But right now, he's still, I would say, a little bit far from returning."
Former Liverpool manager Arne Slot was compelled to deploy Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones as makeshift right backs on occasion last season. Calvin Ramsay curiously failed to earn a single appearance under Slot, while left back Calum Scanlon stepped in to replace Frimpong against Leeds.
For now, Liverpool are counting on Frimpong to be fit and available when the 2026–27 Premier League campaign kicks off against Newcastle United on Aug. 23.
