Liverpool's Wasteful Attack Costs Them Dearly as Burnley Extends Reds' Nightmare Run to Four Games
Liverpool were held to their fourth consecutive Premier League stalemate as they endured a disappointing 1-1 deadlock against relegation-threatened Burnley at Anfield.
Florian Wirtz's fierce strike just before halftime helped ease the burden on Dominik Szoboszlai following his earlier penalty miss, though the Hungarian's wayward spot-kick ultimately proved damaging for the Reds.
Although Liverpool controlled the second period, a momentary defensive lapse enabled Marcus Edwards to level the score for Burnley, and Liverpool couldn't find a winner despite numerous attempts on target.
The result lifts Liverpool past Manchester United into fourth position, but represents another missed chance for Arne Slot's team as they continue searching for their first Premier League victory of the calendar year.

*Ratings courtesy of FotMob*
GK: Alisson—5.8: Made a crucial stop to deny an Ibrahima Konaté own goal but could have handled Edwards's low shot much better.
RB: Jeremie Frimpong—7.6: With Wirtz often drifting infield from the right, Frimpong enjoyed space to charge forward and frequently found himself in scoring positions from crosses.
CB: Ibrahima Konaté—7.4: Nearly deflected the ball into his own net while intercepting a threatening Burnley move and was grateful for Alisson's sharp reactions. Also allowed Edwards excessive space for the equalizer.
CB: Virgil van Dijk—7.5: Faced minimal pressure from Burnley's attack and will be disappointed by another failure to keep a clean sheet.
LB: Milos Kerkez—8.2: A tireless display from the energetic fullback, who consistently appeared in advanced positions around Burnley's penalty area. His crossing accuracy needs improvement but another positive showing.
DM: Ryan Gravenberch—7.8: Maintained midfield rhythm and stood out with 11 defensive actions. Wasted several promising shooting opportunities.
DM: Dominik Szoboszlai—7.6: Following a night of contrasting fortunes against Barnsley, Szoboszlai became the first-half culprit after squandering his penalty chance. Failed to make amends in the second period.
RW: Florian Wirtz—8.2: Thundered home the opening goal with a precise finish and again offered essential creativity against defensive opposition. Central to Liverpool's finest moments and consistently displayed his technical brilliance.
AM: Curtis Jones—7.3: Careless in the opening stages but found his rhythm as the game progressed, appearing in threatening positions and recording an assist.
LW: Cody Gakpo—7.9: Earned the penalty after being brought down in the area and caused problems for Kyle Walker and teammates down Burnley's right flank. Remains too one-dimensional, however, constantly seeking to cut inside for shooting chances.
ST: Hugo Ekitiké—6.8: Jones secured the assist for Wirtz's opener but the goal originated from Ekitiké's determination on the left wing. A moment characteristic of another spirited performance that lacked the decisive touch in the final third.

Liverpool began by asserting their dominance from kickoff and while they controlled early possession, clear-cut opportunities remained elusive. A vital interception from Bashir Humphreys and Hugo Ekitiké's powerful long-range attempt were their standout moments by the first half's midpoint.
The Reds received an ideal chance to break the deadlock just past the half-hour mark, as Florentino Luís's reckless challenge on Cody Gakpo awarded the hosts a penalty. With regular penalty taker Mohamed Salah absent, Szoboszlai approached the spot but struck his attempt against the crossbar—marking just his second career penalty miss outside of shootouts.
Szoboszlai's embarrassment was relieved on the stroke of halftime, though, as Wirtz extended his goal-scoring run with an excellent finish to put Liverpool in front. Ekitiké's blocked shot was recycled by Curtis Jones, who nudged the ball to the German midfielder, and he powerfully drove past Martin Dúbravka from close range.

Liverpool's control continued after the interval as Wirtz became increasingly influential for the home team. The 22-year-old forced a crucial stop from Dúbravka before setting up Cody Gakpo with some excellent footwork in the box, with the Dutch forward's shot cleared off the goal line by Humphreys.
However, Liverpool were soon punished for their wastefulness. The Reds have battled to preserve leads this campaign due to their vulnerable defense and they relinquished their lead with 25 minutes left. Edwards discovered space in the penalty box and was found by Luís, before firing past Alisson into the bottom corner.
Liverpool pressed desperately for a winner as they besieged the Burnley goal. Ekitiké had an effort disallowed for offside and came close to converting a simple finish, Alexis Mac Allister blazed over from close quarters and Dúbravka was called into action with several long-range saves, but Liverpool couldn't secure the decisive goal as they managed their third draw against promoted teams at Anfield this season.
