Luis Enrique Dramatically Changes Stance on Kylian Mbappe Ahead of Crucial Revenge Clash

PSG manager Luis Enrique remained cautious when discussing the anticipated encounter with Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappé in Wednesday's Club World Cup semifinal, though he did reveal how his tactical philosophy has evolved during the year since parting ways with the French superstar.
Enrique's tenure with Mbappé at PSG lasted only the 2023–24 campaign. The French forward netted 44 times across 48 matches but failed to guide the Parisian outfit past the Champions League semifinal stage.
"We will improve next season, without question," Enrique confidently declared after Mbappé's departure to Real Madrid became inevitable in summer 2024. "When a player departs for his preferred destination, it indicates aspects of our system that remain beyond my influence. Next season, I will have complete authority over every element. No exceptions whatsoever."
PSG's post-Mbappé squad validated Enrique's initial forecast, securing the club's maiden European trophy with a dominant victory over Inter in the championship match.
Reflecting on this dramatic turnaround and his earlier statements regarding control, Enrique acknowledged: "The beauty of operating at this elite level is that today's convictions may shift tomorrow. PSG's strength lies in embracing less control; our unpredictability becomes our greatest asset."

New signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia perfectly represents this unpredictable approach. However, the Georgian attacker—along with every other forward in PSG's current lineup—demonstrates equal commitment in defensive duties as in attacking phases.
This defensive work rate was something Enrique attempted but failed to develop in Mbappé. "As a striker, you're divine, I understand, exceptional, elite," the Spanish tactician told his former star, as documented in No Tenéis Ni Puta Idea, "but that's not my primary concern. When you press defensively, that's the foundation. Add [Ousmane] Dembélé, [Randal] Kolo Muani, Marco Asensio pressing alongside you, and we become an unstoppable force. That's when you reach Michael Jordan status."
Real Madrid's new coach Xabi Alonso has already emphasized to Mbappé and the attacking unit that consistent pressing is essential. "Defensive responsibility belongs to everyone," he stressed recently, "all 11 players must contribute defensively."
Mbappé's exact role against PSG remains uncertain as he continues his recovery to peak condition.
