Madueke and Two Arsenal Stars Dealt Blow as England Suffers Mass Withdrawal Crisis

Arsenal's Noni Madueke, Bukayo Saka, and Declan Rice were among eight players who withdrew from England's squad ahead of the Three Lions' second friendly of the March international break, raising fresh injury worries for the Premier League table-toppers.

Madueke's withdrawal was anticipated and is arguably the most alarming. The pacey winger started England's clash with Uruguay on Friday night but was substituted before the break following an early collision. He was later photographed leaving Wembley with a brace fitted to his left knee.

For Arsenal supporters seeking reassurance, England's official statement regarding Madueke's exit described the issue as merely "a knock."

The same communication only went as far as confirming that Rice and Saka had returned to north London "for medical assessment." They were not the only ones.

The Eight Players to Withdraw From England Duty

John Stones

Alongside the Arsenal trio, Manchester City's John Stones was also compelled to withdraw from Tuesday's friendly against Japan. The injury-prone centre-back was reported to have "picked up an issue in training" ahead of Friday's stalemate with Uruguay, representing yet another fitness blow.

When fully healthy, Stones would undoubtedly be Thomas Tuchel's preferred defensive option. Equipped with a tactical intelligence honed through years under Pep Guardiola, the ball-playing centre-back fundamentally elevates England's attacking threat.

It was telling that Uruguay allowed England's defensive pairing of Harry Maguire and Fikayo Tomori all the time they needed on the ball at Wembley, confident their high block would remain untroubled by the defenders' conservative distribution. With Stones in possession, England's danger multiplies dramatically.

The so-called 'Barnsley Beckenbauer' is far more adept at evading a high press than he is at avoiding the treatment room. Stones has started just four Premier League matches this season, missing 21 games across all competitions through a series of muscular injuries.

Arsenal Plagued by FIFA Virus

Gabriel, William Saliba

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been open about his frustration with international breaks. "It's a period that I don't enjoy a lot," the Spanish tactician admitted earlier this month, "especially when we have 18, 19 players playing and especially with what happened in our recent history with very important players, but it's part of the calendar and we have to accept that."

The Gunners' unfortunate pattern of key players picking up injuries while on international duty—the so-called FIFA virus—has struck again in Madueke's case, though the winger is just one of eight Arsenal players to have withdrawn from international commitments in March.

There are genuine concerns surrounding Madueke and fellow Crystal Palace man Eberechi Eze, who is reportedly set to miss the whole of April with a calf injury sustained before the international break had even started. However, the situation may not be as dire as the raw numbers imply.

Every Arsenal Player to Withdraw From International Duty in March 2026

Of Arsenal's eight international absentees, five withdrew from friendly matches without having played a single minute and with no injury concerns entering the break. Leandro Trossard, William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhães, Declan Rice, and Bukayo Saka all featured in last weekend's deflating Carabao Cup final loss to Manchester City and appeared to come through the game unharmed — physically, at least.

Arsenal remain in contention for three major honours this season and face a congested schedule packed with high-profile fixtures in the weeks ahead. The five players mentioned would all be expected to feature prominently for their nations at this summer's World Cup, a standing unlikely to be jeopardised by sitting out a friendly.

Even if Arteta harbours some residual concerns about these returning players, he may have the luxury of rotating his squad for Arsenal's first game back — an FA Cup quarterfinal against Championship side Southampton.
