Man City Crumbles Against Nottingham Forest as Arsenal Seizes Golden Opportunity in Title Race

Manchester City began March with a surprising 2–2 stalemate against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday evening, ending their impressive six-match winning run.

The Citizens dominated proceedings during the opening period and earned a deserved 1–0 advantage at the break courtesy of Antoine Semenyo's strike in the 31st minute. However, the match completely shifted in the second period when Morgan Gibbs-White produced a stunning backheel finish to level the score for Forest.

Rodri calmed the anxiety spreading through the Etihad Stadium as he nodded home the decisive goal shortly after the hour mark. However, the home side surrendered their advantage once more when England international Elliot Anderson fired home a superb effort in reply.

Neither team could find a decisive goal, and the spoils were divided when the referee's whistle concluded proceedings. Manchester City, holding a match in reserve, now sit seven points behind table-toppers Arsenal in the Premier League championship chase.

Rodri

Similar to the weekend encounter against Leeds United, Antoine Semenyo was the one to open the scoring for Man City. Found by Rayan Cherki, the Ghanaian forward, positioned unmarked approximately 10 yards from goal, was able to calmly slot the ball with his right foot into the net to put his team ahead.

The early goal wasn't sufficient to secure all three points, however, as Nottingham Forest grabbed a surprising leveler in the second period. Rodri then stepped up heroically and restored the Cityzens' lead. The Spanish midfielder powered home the crucial goal just after the hour mark.

Phil Foden

Rúben Dias had minimal work to handle throughout most of the contest until a superb attacking move from the visitors on the counter. Suddenly, the Portuguese defender was required to contain Morgan Gibbs-White just yards from goal, but he positioned his legs dangerously wide, permitting the attacking midfielder to flick an equalizer through the opening and into the net.

Phil Foden then became the culprit for the evening. Just as City had regained their advantage through Rodri's header, Foden was completely beaten by a neat exchange between Anderson and Callum Hudson-Odoi leading to Forest's second strike. The English midfielder was careless in his defensive duties and simply observed as Anderson slotted home his effort.

*Ratings Provided by FotMob*

GK: Gianluigi Donnarumma—5.7: Had minimal work during the opening half, but was beaten by an exceptional finish from Gibbs-White and a distance strike from Anderson.

RB: Matheus Nunes—6.7: Delivered enticing crosses into the penalty area but lacked precision in the final moment to find his teammates.

CB: Rúben Dias—6.9: Had little more to accomplish than casually patrol near the center circle for most of the encounter. Was nutmegged by Gibbs-White to permit Forest's comeback.

CB: Marc Guéhi—6.9: Barely made an error defensively, but it was his forward movement in the buildup to the match's first goal that highlighted his performance.

LB: Rayan Aït-Nouri—8.1: Unable to pressure Ola Aina before Forest's goal briefly tainted an otherwise excellent display from the wing-back. He made amends by providing Rodri's goal.

DM: Rodri—8.3: His contributions were seldom required in the first 45 minutes, but he emerged when crucial to score the leading goal in the second half.

RM: Phil Foden—7.6: Was embarrassed in the buildup to Anderson's equalizer. Appeared disinterested in pressuring his opponent and his team suffered for it.

AM: Bernardo Silva (c)—8.2: His skillful touch was evident throughout. Generated opportunities where none seemed possible and had Forest players pursuing his movements, attempting—and failing—to win possession.

LM: Rayan Cherki—8.2: Appeared ready to create a threatening opportunity whenever he received possession. Assisted Semenyo's opener with a clever movement inside the area that attracted three defenders, none of whom could prevent his precise delivery to the striker.

ST: Erling Haaland—6.3: Displayed moments of threat, but was largely a bystander during the match. Seemed more focused on attempting to earn penalties than finding the net.

ST: Antoine Semenyo—7.9: Maintained his excellent recent form. Has now netted seven times since his January transfer to Manchester. Unfortunate not to score during added time.

SUB: Jérémy Doku (77' for Foden)—6.7: Brought energy down the left wing, but ultimately couldn't influence the final outcome.

SUB: Abdukodir Khusanov (77' for Aït-Nouri)—6.1: Any defensive contributions from the wing-back were unnecessary as Man City pressed for a winner.

SUB: Savinho (82' for Cherki)—N/A
