Those expecting Manchester City to immediately feel the consequences of their guilty verdict were left sorely disappointed this weekend as Enzo Maresca's squad stormed to a convincing win against Liverpool.
Many are now questioning whether there is any real purpose in continuing a season unfolding against the backdrop of what may be the most significant controversy the Premier League has ever faced. Having been found guilty of numerous financial regulation violations between 2009 and 2018, City potentially face a monumental punishment that could fundamentally reshape English football as we know it.
For now, no sanctions have been imposed, with City appealing the ruling and consistently expressing confidence that their innocence will ultimately be established. This has left the Premier League in a state of uncertainty, yet clubs do hold the collective power to push for the most severe of penalties—expulsion from the division.
Per Rule B6 of the Premier League's regulations: "The League may expel a Club from membership upon a special Resolution to that effect being passed by a majority of not less than three-quarters of such members as (being entitled to do so) vote by their representatives or by proxy at a General Meeting of which notice specifying the intention to propose the Resolution has been duly given."
In simple terms, this means 15 clubs could unite and vote to remove City from the competition with immediate effect. According to The Independent, such discussions have reportedly already taken place among several club executives.
"This is a farce that will lead to protest, damage to the integrity and reputation of the competition, and possibly even violence," one executive was quoted as saying. "The board has a duty at law to its shareholders to protect, enhance and promote the interests of the Premier League."
