Manchester City edged past Burnley 1–0 on Wednesday at Turf Moor to move to the summit of the Premier League, with Erling Haaland's goal in the fifth minute making all the difference.
Jérémy Doku was the architect of the winner, bringing a bouncing ball under control at the halfway line before threading it through to Haaland, who had carved between the center backs and was in full stride. Bearing down on Burnley goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka in a one-on-one situation, the striker produced a cheeky chip into the side netting, netting his fifth goal across his last four outings.
City kept pressing relentlessly, generating 13 shots in the opening half alone and looking dangerous in the final third, yet failed to add to their tally despite having chances to be 4–0 up before the break. Burnley, for their part, were far from passive, carving out five genuine opportunities down the left channel and frequently exploiting an out-of-sync and exposed Matheus Nunes.
While Man City tightened things up defensively in the second half, they looked even more lethargic going forward, unable to convert any of their 15 attempts and finishing the match with just three big chances compared to Burnley's two.
Still, Pep Guardiola's side banked three points to not only climb to the top of the table, but also build on the buzz generated by their thrilling 2–1 victory over Arsenal at the weekend, carrying strong momentum into the FA Cup semifinal clash with Southampton on Saturday.
One Thing We Can't Ignore

City should have put the game to bed before halftime, yet went into the break with just a 1–0 lead, and contributed little more in the second period. While they were often incisive in breaking through Burnley's defensive shape and getting into dangerous areas—producing some genuinely impressive build-up play in the final third—they were profligate when it came to finishing. They registered 13 shots in the first half, with only six on target and just one converted. They ended the game with 28 attempts, only nine of which troubled the keeper.
Dúbravka certainly delivered a standout performance between the sticks, but it could be argued that Man City did much of the work to elevate him. All the attacking quality in the world counts for nothing if it doesn't result in goals, particularly when the visitors had the chance to pad their goal difference against a side now officially condemned to relegation.
City may now sit at the top of the title race, but you'd expect a league leader to dismantle a team already doomed to go down. They will need to rediscover their clinical edge across their remaining five league fixtures, particularly against fourth-placed Aston Villa on the final day, if they are to see out the season as champions.
At the other end, City's defensive unit was alarmingly leaky, particularly down the right flank in the opening half, conceding five genuine chances to Burnley—a significant number given how little possession the Clarets enjoyed. The hosts could easily have leveled the score were it not for a commanding display from Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Man City Player Ratings vs. Burnley (4-2-3-1)

*Ratings provided by FotMob*
GK: Gianluigi Donnarumma—7.8: Handled everything asked of him, despite being called into action more than he should have been on the night.
RB: Matheus Nunes—7.8: Caught out twice on his flank by Burnley within the opening six minutes, gifting the hosts two early chances on goal. Looked completely out of step with Abdukodir Khusanov.
CB: Abdukodir Khusanov—8.1: Difficult to hold him accountable for Nunes's lapses, but his side of the defense was Burnley's only real outlet for a reason. Did produce a crucial sliding intervention to snuff out a threatening breakaway in the 30th minute.
CB: Marc Guéhi—7.5: Managed well to compensate for the disarray caused by Nunes and Khusanov.
LB: Rayan Aït-Nouri—7.4: Dependable on the left flank. Effectively shut down that channel and kept Loum Tchaouna quiet throughout.
CM: Nico O'Reilly—7.2: Made the most of an uncommon starting opportunity, proving integral to launching attacks and sustaining a consistent yet relentless tempo.
CM: Bernardo Silva—8.6: Linked up brilliantly with Doku throughout the match. Dependable as ever.
RM: Antoine Semenyo—6.8: Dynamic and intelligent with his off-ball movement. Instrumental in getting City into dangerous positions. Gave Quilindschy Hartman and Maxime Estève a torrid time all evening, frequently simultaneously.
AM: Rayan Cherki—8.5: Positioned very high up the pitch, applying relentless pressure in the final third alongside Haaland to stretch the center backs. Fashioned four chances within the first 25 minutes, all while showing composure in possession.
LM: Jérémy Doku—8.2: The creator behind Haaland's early opener. Brought a bouncing ball under control at the halfway line before releasing the striker into space. A constant headache for Burnley to contain across the attacking third.
ST: Erling Haaland—8.3: Produced a superb run to get in behind and face Dúbravka one-on-one, coolly chipping into the side netting for his 23rd league goal of the campaign. Exceptional.
SUB: Savinho (65' for Semenyo)—6.7: Went close in the 70th minute, only to be denied by Dúbravka's right leg. The effort at least won a corner.
SUB: Nico González (65' for Aït-Nouri)—7.0: Came close to doubling City's lead in the 85th minute with a strike from outside the box that narrowly missed the target.
Subs not used: James Trafford (GK), John Stones, Nathan Aké, Mateo Kovacic, Phil Foden, Tijjani Reijnders, Omar Marmoush.
