Manchester City are said to be pursuing Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández in what could be a massive summer transfer, one that Enzo Maresca "would love" to see completed.
Fernández spent the early part of the summer heavily linked with Real Madrid, only for the 15-time European champions to publicly declare they have "no intention" of signing the Argentina international.
Transfer speculation around Fernández cooled following that blunt statement, particularly with the 25-year-old due to rejoin Chelsea on Wednesday after the 2026 World Cup. However, the midfielder, who has previously flirted with leaving west London, could find himself back in the headlines following an approach from Manchester City.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Cityzens have reached out to Fernández's representatives regarding a potential move to the Etihad Stadium. Maresca is believed to be in favor of a reunion with his former player, though the transfer ultimately comes down to the fee.
Chelsea "insist" on receiving no less than £120 million ($162 million) for Fernández. City "hope to negotiate" a deal, but the Blues appear firm on their valuation and unwilling to accept anything below their asking price.
How Rodri's Potential Transfer Plays Into Fernández's Future
City are clearly planning for life without reigning Golden Ball and World Cup winner Rodri. The midfielder has reportedly decided to join Barcelona this summer, departing Manchester with just one year remaining on his current contract.
The English club turned down the Catalans' opening offer of $52 million (£38.5 million) for Rodri, though talks are still ongoing. City are also expected to bring in World Cup breakout star Ayyoub Bouaddi, but reports suggest the teenager is not arriving at the Etihad to fill the void Rodri would leave behind.
That role could instead be handed to Fernández. The Chelsea star has cemented himself as one of the Premier League's finest midfielders and hit his peak form under Maresca's guidance.
Linking up with the Italian manager once more, this time donning a sky blue shirt, could represent the fresh start Fernández has been seeking ever since his public dispute with the Chelsea hierarchy, which resulted in a two-game ban for remarks about a potential transfer last season.
However, City have already brought in Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest this summer for a hefty $153.9 million (£116 million). The club also boasts Nico González, Tijjani Reijnders, and Mateo Kovačić in central midfield.
Adding Fernández to the squad would only truly make sense if Rodri completes his move to Catalonia. Should that deal collapse and the Spaniard stays in Manchester, City would likely be reluctant to meet Chelsea's steep asking price for Fernández, regardless of how appealing the Argentine's versatility and creativity would be at the Etihad.
Maresca has also reportedly reached out personally to Chelsea winger Pedro Neto, who is being considered as a potential replacement for Savinho should the Brazilian depart City this summer.
