Man City Makes Bold Move for Elite Right-Back Target

Manchester City have reportedly made "inquiries" regarding Barcelona's defender Jules Koundé, as the French international faces a pivotal juncture in his professional journey.

The defender will celebrate his 27th birthday this year, entering his prime years, though his current deal at Camp Nou - signed when he joined in summer 2022 - has just two seasons remaining.

Manchester City have secured nine fresh signings in 2025 thus far, forming part of an essential squad overhaul under Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium. This reconstruction remains incomplete, with right-back representing a critical requirement following Kyle Walker's departure to Burnley and Matheus Nunes frequently filling the void.

Journalist Fabrice Hawkins reveals that City have been monitoring Koundé's circumstances, seeking details about his Barcelona status along with another unnamed "elite" organization.

Barcelona naturally wish to retain a player who has demonstrated such consistency, with fresh contract discussions reportedly continuing for "multiple weeks". Both Koundé and the organization hope for a "favorable resolution" in these talks, as Barça regards him as the finest globally in his role.

Koundé established his reputation as a centre-back during his time with previous club Sevilla, but Barcelona's shortage of right-sided options in Catalonia allowed them to utilize his adaptability.

Manchester City currently lack adequate right-back coverage. Rico Lewis remains the sole recognized option in the first-team squad, though his flexibility has frequently led Guardiola to deploy him on the left flank and in central areas. Alternative choices include Nunes, naturally an offensive midfielder, and centre-half Manuel Akanji. Newcastle United's Tino Livramento was viewed as City's primary objective but appears set to extend his stay with the Magpies.

City's transfer activity this summer has mainly bolstered midfield and left-back positions, through the signings of Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Aït-Nouri respectively. Rayan Cherki will provide offensive support, while young midfielder Sverre Nypan may be sent on loan.
