Man City Makes Bold Move to Steal Newcastle's Target - Their Own Former Academy Graduate

Manchester City have held discussions with Burnley regarding a potential summer transfer for goalkeeper James Trafford, according to reports.
City are currently in their second transfer window of what has proven to be a costly squad overhaul, with Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, Rayan Aït-Nouri, Sverre Nypan and Marcus Bettinelli all signing contracts at the Etihad Stadium during this summer period.
Although the emphasis remains on bringing in new players, City are simultaneously considering numerous departures, with goalkeeper pair Ederson and Stefan Ortega both reportedly attracting interest from other clubs.
Should City part ways with either keeper, Fabrizio Romano reports they will target a transfer for Trafford, who developed through City's youth system but has impressed significantly since his move to Burnley in summer 2023.
Trafford failed to make any first-team appearances for City but was named as an unused substitute in Premier League, Champions League and Carabao Cup matches during 2020–21, before undertaking multiple loan spells that eventually led to his selection for England's senior national team in 2024.

After delivering outstanding performances in the Championship with Burnley during the previous campaign, Trafford has become a firm target for Newcastle United, though City's buy-back provision has thus far blocked any potential transfer.
City possess the right to re-acquire Trafford for £40 million ($53.7 million) but are attempting to secure a reduced price for that amount.
Burnley are reportedly seeking a comparable sum to part with Trafford. The 22-year-old goalkeeper has a contract running until summer 2027.
In addition to the buy-back provision, City are also understood to be entitled to 20% of any transfer fee should Burnley decide to sell their standout goalkeeper this summer.
