Man City Smash Records with Blockbuster James Trafford Sale Deal

Manchester City have reportedly agreed to sell James Trafford, finalizing a $53 million (£40 million) deal with Leeds United that would make him the most expensive British goalkeeper in football history.

Trafford arrived at City last summer expected to be the club's first-choice keeper. However, the opportunity to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma later emerged, and the Italian quickly displaced the former Burnley goalkeeper, who had initially started the season as the No. 1.

The Athletic's David Ornstein first reported the agreement, disclosing that Trafford is set to join the Yorkshire side in a deal valued at $53 million plus additional bonuses.

Newcastle United had also been pursuing the England international and were thought to be Trafford's preferred choice. However, the Magpies withdrew from the race, leaving the door open for Leeds to move in.

What Went So Wrong for James Trafford?

Nearly a year to the day after he surpassed Jordan Pickford's record as England's most valuable goalkeeper, Trafford is now poised to break his own record.

Within barely a month, City moved swiftly to acquire Donnarumma for a bargain $35 million. The Italy international never lost his place in the starting lineup, leaving Trafford restricted to domestic cup appearances. Despite this, the 23-year-old played a significant part in City's FA Cup and Carabao Cup double. He was especially impressive in the Carabao Cup final against Arsenal, producing a remarkable triple save early in the match to deny the Gunners the opening goal.

With Donnarumma firmly established at City, Trafford was always going to look for regular first-team football elsewhere this summer. A host of Premier League clubs were alerted to his availability, and Leeds appear to have won the battle for his services.

Leeds were widely expected to go down last season but ultimately survived with relative ease. Daniel Farke's mid-season switch to a back three proved to be a turning point, transforming Leeds into a side that was extremely difficult to break down. They now look to build on that stability, and landing Trafford would represent a significant statement of intent.

Veteran goalkeeper Karl Darlow departed the club earlier this summer, while Lucas Perri remains in their goalkeeping ranks. However, Perri was pushed out by Darlow last season and has not done enough to persuade Farke that he is capable of being the club's long-term No. 1.

Should Trafford complete his move to Elland Road, he would immediately take over as the starting goalkeeper, having also traveled with England to the World Cup. The 23-year-old is widely regarded as a future first-choice keeper for the national team.

Once this transfer is confirmed, Trafford will slot in as the fifth most expensive goalkeeper in the history of the sport.

He will hold the record as the costliest English goalkeeper, though his $53 million fee still falls well short of Kepa Arrizabalaga's $91 million move to Chelsea back in 2018. That same year, Liverpool invested $71 million in Roma's Alisson, a signing that proved far more fruitful than Kepa's time at Stamford Bridge.

The generationally gifted Gianluigi Buffon cost Juventus $60 million back in 2001 — the same figure Manchester United paid for André Onana in 2023. The Cameroonian failed to nail down the No. 1 spot United had hoped for, and he is now heading into his second loan spell at Turkish side Trabzonspor.
