Manchester City's activity in the 2026 summer transfer window won't stop at splashing over a quarter of a billion dollars on Ayyoub Bouaddi and another top-tier, potentially club record-setting, central midfielder. Wide players are also firmly on their agenda.
City's substantial sales — including offloading Tiijani Reijnders, Rodri, Savinho, Omar Marmoush and James Trafford — have bankrolled the midfield overhaul to the extent that net spending this window remains minimal, provided $164 million-valued Enzo Fernández becomes the third midfield signing. The club could even turn a net profit if the third midfielder turns out to be Alexis Mac Allister, Adam Wharton or Alex Scott.
That leaves room to continue strengthening in an effort to arm new head coach Enzo Maresca with a squad considered capable of mounting a title challenge against defending champions Arsenal.
Wingers are now thinner on the ground than before, with Jérémy Doku, Antoine Semenyo and a returning Jack Grealish among the wide options available to Maresca. It would also come as little surprise if Grealish departed before the window shuts, having spent last season on loan at Everton.
Man City 'Agree' Deal for Savinho Replacement
According to The Athletic, a somewhat unexpected agreement for one wide attacker has already been reached. City will pay Brazilian outfit Palmeiras — the club that has recently produced the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Endrick and Estêvão — a guaranteed $43.7 million (£32.1 million) for Allan Elias, with the fee potentially rising to $46.7 million (£34.3 million) through add-ons.
That figure represents less than half of the release clause that was originally believed to be the asking price.
The young talent is not quite the raw teenage sensation that Endrick or Estêvão were, but rather a more seasoned 22-year-old who has contributed 21 goals and assists across 96 appearances.
Despite never having represented his country at any international level — which may raise eyebrows given his age and transfer fee — he is regarded as a capable dribbler who also puts in a strong defensive shift, giving him the ability to operate as a wingback. Allan is left-footed and plays on the right, pointing to a direct replacement for Savinho.
Cody Gakpo Transfer Battle Brewing
Allan may not be the only winger heading to the Etihad Stadium before next Tuesday, as a separate The Athletic report reveals City's interest in Liverpool's Cody Gakpo.
It's an unexpected development. Gakpo drew criticism from Liverpool supporters last season and was widely expected to leave Anfield this summer as the club looked to upgrade. However, with Tottenham Hotspur reviving their long-standing interest and Gakpo delivering a standout display in an otherwise disjointed Liverpool performance against Newcastle United on Sunday, the Dutchman has suddenly become a sought-after commodity again.
There is little concrete progress at this stage, with no "club-to-club talks" having occurred yet. Gakpo signed a fresh five-year deal only last August, meaning Liverpool hold the upper hand in any negotiations, and the club were reported earlier this summer to have no intention of selling.
Gakpo would almost certainly not feature in City's first-choice lineup, but could serve as valuable cover for Doku on the left or even Haaland in the No. 9 position now that Marmoush is on his way out. The key question remains whether he would sacrifice a starting berth at a lesser club for a squad role at a stronger one.
