Manchester City have the opportunity to close the gap on Premier League table-toppers Arsenal this weekend when they travel to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Arsenal's slip-up at home against Bournemouth on Saturday lunchtime has opened the door for the in-form Cityzens, who could pull to within six points of their title rivals with a win in west London, while also holding a game in hand.
Back-to-back landmark victories over Arsenal and Liverpool around the international break have lifted spirits, and City will head to Stamford Bridge full of confidence ahead of another potential statement result.
Defensive Woes for Cityzens
Pep Guardiola is relatively untroubled by injuries heading into a run of crucial fixtures, beginning with the trip to the capital. That said, three key defensive players remain sidelined for the title contenders.
Rúben Dias and Joško Gvardiol are both ruled out this weekend through injury, while John Stones is a major doubt after picking up a calf problem while on international duty with England.
Gianluigi Donnarumma could be the sole change from the side that dismantled Liverpool 4–0 in their last outing, stepping in for impressive stand-in James Trafford between the posts.
Man City Predicted Lineup vs. Chelsea (4-2-3-1)
GK: Gianluigi Donnarumma—Trafford has been outstanding in the victories over Arsenal and, most notably, Liverpool, but Donnarumma remains the undisputed number one and is expected to start the remaining Premier League fixtures.
RB: Matheus Nunes—Nunes showed both sides of his game last weekend. A brilliant attacking run contributed to the opening goal, yet his defensive frailties were exposed by Hugo Ekitiké, who won a penalty as a result.
CB: Abdukodir Khusanov—Khusanov had a nightmare debut against Chelsea last season but has developed considerably since then. With Dias, Gvardiol and Stones all unavailable, Guardiola will still trust the Uzbekistan international to handle Chelsea's potent attack.
CB: Marc Guéhi—The ex-Chelsea man has yet to taste victory against his former club, having lost eight of nine appearances against them during his time at Crystal Palace. Claiming that elusive first win at Stamford Bridge would be especially satisfying.
LB: Nico O'Reilly—Estêvão looks set to be O'Reilly's likely opponent on Sunday. While he can take advantage of the Brazilian's high positioning by pushing forward from left back, he must remain alert to the attacking danger his fellow youngster presents.
DM: Rodri—The Real Madrid transfer target has been commanding in recent wins and must assert himself in the midfield contest against former teammate Cole Palmer.
DM: Bernardo Silva—Questions surrounding Silva's future at the Etihad Stadium persist, but the Portuguese playmaker will be entirely focused on ending the season with a domestic treble.
RW: Antoine Semenyo—A shrewd January acquisition, Semenyo has been integral to City's pursuit of three trophies. Whatever the final tally, the Ghana international has made a remarkable impression in his debut half-season at the club.
AM: Rayan Cherki—Cherki has been outstanding in victories over Arsenal and Liverpool, and the Frenchman will be eager to twist the knife against former suitors Chelsea.
LW: Jérémy Doku—Doku's blistering pace has overwhelmed recent opponents, and the Belgian looks well-placed to relish his duel with Malo Gusto on Sunday.
ST: Erling Haaland—Haaland's hat-trick against Liverpool has him firing at precisely the right time. Tellingly, he has racked up five goal contributions in his last five outings against the Blues and will be hungry to exploit a depleted Chelsea backline.
