Man City's Clinical Edge Crumbles Against Chelsea as Missed Chances Haunt Cityzens

Manchester City were denied victory by a dramatic 94th-minute leveller from Chelsea's Enzo Fernández in a thrilling 1-1 Premier League encounter at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The Citizens controlled proceedings for the majority of the match but couldn't capitalize on what was essentially a commanding display. Tijjani Reijnders found the net with the opening goal just before the break, while Erling Haaland also hit the woodwork and several other opportunities went begging.

The Blues showed marked improvement following the interval and started generating their own scoring chances, ultimately being rewarded for their determination when Fernández struck deep into added time.

Following Arsenal's victory against Bournemouth on Saturday, this result leaves City trailing the table-topping Gunners by six points as the campaign reaches its midway point.

Adding to Pep Guardiola's concerns will be the injury setbacks to both first-choice center-backs—Rúben Dias and Joško Gvardiol—who suffered apparent knocks during the second period.

Man City Player Ratings vs. Chelsea (4-3-2-1)

Erling Haaland

*Player ratings courtesy of Fotmob*

GK: Gianluigi Donnarumma—7.9: Remained largely untested until Chelsea registered their first effort on goal with 20 minutes remaining, producing a routine yet crucial save. Nearly prevented the equalizing goal.

RB: Matheus Nunes—7.4: Pedro Neto found space on several occasions down that flank without inflicting the damage he might have. The makeshift City fullback may feel he could have done better to prevent the cross that led to Fernández's goal.

CB: Rúben Dias—7.3: Forced off before the final whistle after sustaining an injury late in proceedings.

CB: Joško Gvardiol—6.9: Substituted just minutes into the second half with what looked like an ankle injury.

LB: Nico O'Reilly—7.3: Faced a potentially difficult evening against Estêvão, but emerged victorious from that personal duel as the Brazilian didn't return after halftime.

CM: Bernardo Silva (c)—6.4: Set the tone for his teammates but delivered a restrained showing in terms of personal contribution.

CM: Rodri—8.3: Returned to the starting lineup for the first time since October. Delivered a composed display despite limited game time this campaign, showcasing his exceptional quality.

CM: Tijjani Reijnders—7.7: Extended his impressive goalscoring streak. The opportunity wasn't straightforward, and he was rewarded for his intelligent forward run.

RF: Rayan Cherki—6.6: Posed a constant threat from early on and played a key role in creating the opening goal. Struggled with consistency in the final third.

LF: Phil Foden—6.6: Began energetically before appearing to lose influence after the break. Most effective during the first 45 minutes.

ST: Erling Haaland—7.2: A subdued opening but began troubling Chelsea's defense toward the end of the first half. Hit the inside of the upright.

Man City 1–1 Chelsea—How Events Unfolded at Etihad Stadium

Tijjani Reijnders put Man City in front.

City quickly established control of possession, though it became apparent that Chelsea would provide stubborn resistance for the home side to break down. This meant early opportunities were scarce for both teams as final balls lacked precision or defensive work snuffed out danger.

The opening 20 minutes passed without a single attempt, before Chelsea created the first genuine chance on the counter-attack. The ball eventually reached Estêvão, whose instinctive effort was brilliantly blocked by Joško Gvardiol. Moments later at the opposite end, Phil Foden cut inside and fired just wide of the target from close to the penalty area.

Erling Haaland found himself isolated during the opening period, closely monitored by Chelsea's backline—one notable moment saw Benoît Badiashile apply enough pressure to disrupt the towering striker as he attempted to connect with a dangerous delivery.

However, as Chelsea attempted to withstand City's increasing pressure, their resolve eventually cracked. The warning signs were evident. Haaland began to assert himself more, with a deflected effort only kept out by the fingertips of Chelsea's substitute keeper Filip Jörgensen, before City's striker then struck the inside of the post.

When Reijnders opened the scoring in spectacular fashion, the initial pass from Rayan Cherki was meant for Haaland. Instead, the ball fell to Reijnders, who shifted it onto his left foot and unleashed a fierce drive between Jörgensen and the near post.

Chelsea emerged with greater purpose after the restart, and City were fortunate when Pedro Neto squandered two chances to restore parity, the second a glaring miss over the crossbar from close range following a sublime turn from Fernández. Another opportunity for Neto went astray just after the hour when Chelsea appeared to have numerical advantage.

While City weren't completely overwhelmed, Chelsea's attacks continued to pose problems. Substitute Liam Delap managed to work space for a shot, forcing an important intervention from Gianluigi Donnarumma, after Abdukodir Khusanov's partial clearance had reduced the power.

Ultimately, Chelsea's second-half resurgence and City's inability to capitalize on their dominance proved decisive. Deep into stoppage time, Malo Gusto's delivery from the right wasn't cleared by Nathan Aké or Matheus Nunes, leaving Fernández unmarked at the back post. His initial close-range attempt was saved by Donnarumma, but the rebound fell kindly back to the Chelsea midfielder, who managed to bundle the ball over the line with his right foot.
