Man City's 'Irrefutable Evidence' They Say Will Shatter All Charges Against Them

Manchester City are essentially daring an appeal panel to question the validity of official Abu Dhabi government documents as they attempt to establish their innocence, according to a new report.

City claimed to possess "irrefutable evidence" of their innocence even prior to being found guilty of over 100 significant financial rule violations and have continued to reference that same body of evidence ahead of their formal appeal, with club officials openly confident they will ultimately prevail in this case.

According to The Telegraph, City's argument centers on an effort to demonstrate that the original panel was wrong to disregard a series of Abu Dhabi government documents and key witnesses in the case.

City believe these documents establish that the Abu Dhabi government, of which City owner Sheikh Mansour is a member, was the source of funding for the sponsorship deals under scrutiny, and will argue that the panel conducting the initial investigation was wrong to flatly dismiss them as evidence.

There is also said to be new evidence from the Abu Dhabi government supporting that argument, which City expect will effectively challenge the appeal panel to determine whether Abu Dhabi officials can be considered credible.

Will Man City Win Their Appeal?

The first hurdle for City is securing a date for their appeal. The process is currently still at the stage of appointing a panel to hear the appeal, after which a formal schedule will be established.

Regulations stipulate that the appeal must be heard no later than 12 weeks after it is filed. In this instance, that would place a deadline of Jan. 21, 2027.

When City officials do appear before that panel, they will be betting that the new panel will consider the same arguments that were previously dismissed outright. Their case largely hinges on alleged misinterpretations of the law and claims that their "irrefutable evidence" was wrongly disregarded.

It is a bold approach, given that the first panel specifically addressed those allegations with a firm rejection. "We concluded that it was an 'explanation' that the Club had concocted well after the event in an attempt to obscure and conceal the realities of the Disguised Funding Scheme," the commission stated.

The appeal panel can review documents and witness testimonies, but is unlikely to hear directly from witnesses once more.

At the conclusion of the appeal, the panel will determine whether to uphold the original verdict, overturn some of the charges against City, or potentially order a retrial if it is felt the case warrants a full rehearing.

City remain firm in their position and hope to have cleared their name before the current season concludes.
