Despite Manchester City already being convicted of 114 charges related to various Premier League financial violations, a number of English football executives are reportedly pushing for the club to be investigated for additional suspected rule-breaking beyond 2018.
Back in September, an independent panel found City guilty of all but one charge brought against them three years prior. The club had orchestrated "sham" contracts and arrangements to artificially inflate revenue and cut costs by £900 million ($1.2 billion) across the 2009–10 through 2017–18 seasons.
City continue to maintain their innocence, going so far as to file an official appeal against the sweeping guilty ruling. However, further trouble may still be on the horizon.
According to The Independent, there is a growing push to scrutinize City's financial dealings over the past eight years, with one key question hanging in the air: "What changed overnight?"
Throughout the already confirmed nine years of misconduct, City benefited from inflated sponsorship arrangements backed by under-the-table funding from their Abu Dhabi owners. The inquiry only covered up to 2018, yet their commercial income remained at comparable levels in the years that followed, according to the report.
The relationship between City and their Abu Dhabi-linked "sponsors" remained unchanged, suggesting potentially ongoing misconduct in subsequent seasons that has yet to be examined. Should additional violations come to light, the club could face a fresh wave of charges.
The Titles City Could Forfeit If Hit With More Charges

As long as City's appeal remains active, all sanctions have been placed on hold. Potential penalties range from hefty fines and transfer bans to points deductions and even expulsion from the Premier League.
There is also the possibility that the club could be stripped of titles won during the seasons in which they cheated. Should that window extend across the full era of dominance under Pep Guardiola, City would be staring at a significantly emptier trophy cabinet.
Beyond the three Premier League titles City claimed between the 2009–10 and 2017–18 seasons, they went on to win the English top-flight crown five more times, including an unprecedented four consecutive league titles from 2020–21 through 2023–24.
Initially, the club's five most recent league titles were merely tainted by the unfair financial advantage City held while assembling Guardiola's squad. However, a deeper examination of City's finances in the years that followed could potentially expose further wrongdoing that helped the club sustain such a prolonged period of dominance.
The 'Dilemma' Surrounding a New Investigation

Not everyone is in favor of the Premier League launching another investigation. The Independent reports that some feel executives are "getting ahead of themselves," particularly given that the original inquiry, which spanned three years, has yet to be fully concluded.
An additional investigation would prolong the process even further, continuing to damage the Premier League's reputation for years to come, when the prevailing desire is simply to "draw a line under the case."
Questions of sufficient evidence also remain. The original investigation was largely triggered by leaked emails covering the period from 2009 to 2018, which were published by Der Spiegel.
Without a comparable smoking gun this time around, there may not be enough grounds to launch a new case, regardless of how strongly some believe City continued to flout the rules.
