Man United Star Slams Cristiano Ronaldo's 'Devastating' Red Card Blunder
Portugal seeks to clinch their spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup this Sunday through a win over Armenia, though the banned Cristiano Ronaldo will be unavailable following his dismissal against the Republic of Ireland, which Bruno Fernandes called "an expensive error."
Ronaldo's temper flared as Portugal attempted a fightback against Ireland on Thursday. The five-time Ballon d'Or recipient allowed his anger to overcome him and struck a defender with his elbow from behind, receiving a dismissal that left Portugal to complete the final 30 minutes with ten players.
Before a crucial clash with Armenia, Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes offered his assessment of Ronaldo's sending-off.
"He's aware he erred," Fernandes stated, according to Mundo Deportivo. "And regrettably he cannot assist us tomorrow."
"During the intensity of play, in that heated moment, the disappointment of not achieving our desired outcome. It's part of football, Cris [Ronaldo] had a response that proved expensive. Clearly something he realizes he didn't intend to do but it occurred."
Cristiano Ronaldo 2026 World Cup Participation Under Threat

No official decision has been announced regarding the duration of Ronaldo's ban after his direct dismissal versus Ireland. Nevertheless, should it exceed a single-game suspension, Ronaldo might miss Portugal's opening match in the 2026 World Cup.
FIFA's Disciplinary Regulations state that striking an opponent with the elbow merits a three-game suspension. Should FIFA enforce their regulations strictly, the Real Madrid icon could face significant consequences.
Portugal coach Roberto Martínez has defended his captain, arguing that the red card doesn't warrant an extended ban.
"It wasn't a violent act," Martínez commented before Portugal's encounter with Armenia. "It's not a dismissal for aggression, but instead a response to provocation."
"[Provocations] started from the opening whistle, in every incident within the box. It was a reaction to continue competing. Others might have fallen down seeking a penalty."
"I believe it would be extremely unjust to enforce a prolonged ban."
