The situation surrounding Marcus Rashford's future has taken yet another turn after reports emerged that the release clause in his Manchester United contract has now lapsed.
The Athletic reports that an arrangement making Rashford available for $53.1 million (£40 million) to clubs outside of Liverpool and Manchester City has expired, meaning any future transfer discussions would need to be conducted directly with United.
Currently, Rashford is expected to return to United's training setup once England's World Cup campaign concludes, though the direction of his career remains highly uncertain.
Could Rashford Leave Man Utd This Summer?
Rashford has already seen a highly anticipated move to Barcelona fall through this summer. Despite a strong loan spell at Camp Nou last season, the option for a permanent deal worth $34.4 million (€30 million) was passed up by Barcelona, who have since invested heavily to bring in England teammate Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United. Borussia Dortmund's Karim Adeyemi is reportedly set to join him at the club.
The release clause had provided Rashford with a clear exit route from Old Trafford, yet it went unused — though not necessarily due to a shortage of interest. Rashford is said to have already rejected approaches from several clubs, including some willing to offer him a pay rise on his current wages. Given the sums involved, those proposals are widely believed to have originated from Saudi Arabia.
In practical terms, however, the expiry of the release clause changes little. United remain willing to sanction a departure but would now need to engage in direct negotiations with any interested parties who missed the clause deadline. The club will welcome bids, though their valuation remains unknown.
Much may ultimately hinge on Rashford himself. As noted, he has already declined offers, suggesting he has a clear idea of where he wants his career to go next.
Reports indicate that Rashford has little appetite for a move to another Premier League side, leaving the door open for a return abroad. However, concrete interest from continental Europe has been scarce so far.
Would Man Utd Keep Rashford?
For now, Rashford is anticipated to return to United later this summer and begin pre-season preparations under new manager Michael Carrick, who is thought to have signalled his openness to welcoming back a player who fell out of favour under his predecessor, Ruben Amorim.
While a transfer remains a possibility for all involved, there appears to be a shared willingness to attempt to repair a relationship that, in truth, was not severely strained by the circumstances of Rashford's exit 18 months ago.
The main sticking point for United is Rashford's wage demands. The 28-year-old is the club's top earner, reportedly taking home well in excess of $404,600 (£300,000) per week, a distinction that has become even more pronounced following the expiry of Casemiro's own lucrative contract.
That level of pay is ideally reserved for undisputed first-team stars. His outstanding 2022–23 campaign, which yielded 30 goals and 12 assists, suggested he was heading in the right direction, but a notable dip in form over recent seasons left United reluctant to continue justifying the outlay.

It is for this reason that United remain receptive to selling, yet the club appear determined not to accept another below-value deal following his six-month loan at Aston Villa and a temporary stint at Barcelona that was widely considered well under his market worth.
Decision-makers at the club will need to carefully assess the merits and drawbacks of retaining Rashford, who could undeniably provide value to a United squad that is short of a genuine left-wing option.
