Man Utd Axe High-Profile Star in Shock Free Transfer as Retained List Is Revealed

Manchester United have announced that Jadon Sancho will leave the club as a free agent this summer once his contract comes to an end.

The Red Devils locked Sancho into a five-year deal when he arrived from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 for a transfer fee of $100.7 million (£72.9 million), with an option included to extend the agreement by an additional 12 months if the club chose to exercise it.

However, following a disappointing five-year spell, United have chosen not to activate that extension clause, allowing Sancho to walk away from Old Trafford without a fee at the end of the month.

Sancho will join Casemiro in heading for the exit, with the duo also accompanied by injury-hit left back Tyrell Malacia.

What Went Wrong for Sancho at Man Utd?

Jadon Sancho

While it's easy to look back with the benefit of hindsight, it's worth remembering that United's signing of Sancho in 2021 was widely regarded as a major triumph at the time, with virtually every top club in the world competing to land a 21-year-old winger who had been outstanding in the Bundesliga.

Across his three complete seasons at Dortmund, Sancho accumulated 37 goals and 47 assists in just 92 league outings—numbers that had many questioning whether United had actually gotten him at a bargain price.

"He will form an integral part of my squad for years to come and we look forward to seeing him blossom," said Ole Gunnar Solskjær, United's manager at the time, in a prediction that would prove deeply unfortunate for all parties.

In 14 appearances under Solskjær, Sancho failed to register a single goal or assist as he struggled with the physical demands of adapting to life in England's top division. At just 21 and with the world expecting Ballon d'Or-level displays week in, week out, every error was placed under a microscope and the weight of expectation became overwhelming.

Erik ten Hag arrived and initially attempted to provide Sancho with a stage to showcase his talents, but the results remained unchanged. The winger wiped his social media presence in November 2022 as the first visible sign of trouble, after which Ten Hag revealed Sancho was facing challenges that were "both physical and mental" in nature.

Reports indicated that Sancho had not given the club his blessing to publicly disclose his personal struggles, sparking an increasingly fractious dynamic between player and manager.

Jadon Sancho, Erik ten Hag

The defining moment arrived in September 2023. Ten Hag stated that Sancho had been omitted from a matchday squad due to substandard training, but the winger responded defiantly on social media, essentially accusing his manager of dishonesty and claiming he was being used as a "scapegoat."

After declining to issue an apology, Sancho was sent back to Dortmund on loan for the rest of the 2023–24 campaign, where he impressed once more as the German club advanced to the Champions League final. A standout display in a semifinal victory over Paris Saint-Germain left many wondering how things had unraveled so badly in Manchester.

In truth, it turned out to be a temporary resurgence for Sancho. Despite reaching an understanding with Ten Hag that summer, the winger headed out on yet another loan, this time to Chelsea, who ultimately paid a financial penalty to avoid their obligation to sign him on a permanent basis despite a mixed campaign.

A final loan stint at Aston Villa was intended to breathe new life into Sancho's career but failed to alter his downward trajectory, as he found it difficult to force his way into Unai Emery's first-choice lineup. A permanent transfer never materialized and United, wary of absorbing the hefty wages that once seemed justifiable, have now severed their ties with Sancho entirely.

Determining where the blame truly lies will never be straightforward. Did Sancho deliver the performances required anywhere outside of Germany? Given the expectations placed on him from the moment he arrived, the honest answer would have to be no. But can that be attributed entirely to Sancho?

It's clear he and Ten Hag were never on the same page, and Sancho never appeared fully at ease in the Premier League, seemingly more suited to taking on the high defensive lines of the Bundesliga than the physical, combative nature of English football. Questions surrounding his ability to handle pressure and the notoriously impatient English football culture must also be considered.

Regardless, the fresh chapter Sancho has been longing for has finally arrived.
