Man Utd Boss Reveals Exact Timeline for Iconic Old Trafford Transformation

Manchester United CEO Collette Roche has confirmed the club is making steady progress on its new stadium plans, with the venue expected to open in 2032.

A vision for a "Wembley of the North" was announced in March 2025, with United aiming to construct England's largest stadium on the grounds of their existing Old Trafford home.

Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe had previously suggested the project would wrap up by 2030, but Roche has now disclosed that the new ground won't be ready for use until several years later, citing the complexity of the preparatory work involved.

"When we first introduced the concept of a new stadium about 12 months ago, we did mention that construction would take four to five years, and that still holds true," said Roche.

"However, people interpreted that as the stadium potentially being ready by 2030. As you'd expect with a build this complex, it takes one to two years of groundwork before construction can even begin — assembling the land, securing funding, and obtaining planning permission.

"That's exactly what we're working through right now. We haven't announced an official opening date, but we remain on track within those projected timelines."

Man Utd Hopeful of Huge Update in Coming Months

Although United already own the Old Trafford site, the proposed development requires expansion onto surrounding land, and negotiations over those acquisitions have encountered difficulties so far.

Roche stressed that progress has been happening "behind the scenes" and expressed optimism that fans will receive a positive update within the next few months.

"Among the areas where we've made headway, land assembly stands out as a key priority," said Roche.

"We want to secure the best possible footprint for this stadium — one with ample surrounding space for top-class facilities, strong connectivity, and an outstanding matchday experience.

"I've been investing considerable time in conversations with local landowners to determine what that looks like, and those discussions are progressing very well. I'm hopeful of sharing some encouraging news on that front within the next few months."
