Two of the Premier League's most troubled sides return to action following a welcome extended international break, as Manchester United host Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.
Saturday's encounter pits the disappointing Red Devils against the league's bottom side, with Spurs having collected just two points from their opening five fixtures. Their first league goals of the campaign didn't come until Aston Villa visited N17 before the break, and even then they found themselves 3–0 down before mounting a late comeback.
The underlying statistics indicate Roberto De Zerbi is close to making things "click," having overseen a significant squad overhaul in the summer with a record outlay on 10 new signings.
The sweeping changes following last season's alarming relegation battle raised expectations ahead of the new campaign, yet Spurs, much like Saturday's hosts, have failed to deliver so far.
No Premier League side accumulated more points than Manchester United after Michael Carrick stepped in on an interim basis last term, with their strong second-half-of-season form securing a return to Champions League football.
However, things have been difficult since Carrick was handed the permanent role. The Red Devils have already been knocked out of the Carabao Cup and managed just one league victory—a 5–2 thrashing of newly promoted Ipswich Town. Prior to the break, United fell to a 10-man Manchester City in the derby and required a late deflected effort from Matheus Cunha to rescue a point at Fulham, who were sitting at the very bottom of the table at the time.

Pressure Eases on Carrick

Neither manager's position is quite under immediate threat, but both are undoubtedly feeling the pressure. Carrick brushed aside dismissal speculation before the break, while De Zerbi continues to enjoy the goodwill of the Tottenham faithful after steering the club away from relegation last season.
Nevertheless, the poor form cannot continue. For United, Saturday's match kicks off a gruelling run before the end of October, with five fixtures crammed into 18 days. Given their inconsistent start to the campaign, it feels like a defining month for the Red Devils.
This is also a fixture that hasn't been particularly kind to United recently. The "Lads, it's Tottenham" narrative has been notably absent in Manchester, with Spurs going on an eight-game unbeaten run before United secured a 2–0 win earlier this year.
The Lilywhites have every reason to be confident heading to the Theatre of Dreams, and a win here could well spark a season that has yet to truly begin.

Man Utd Predicted Lineup vs. Tottenham

A couple of worrying injury updates have emerged from Manchester following the three-week international break.
Carrick has confirmed that Patrick Dorgu, who missed a lengthy spell with a hamstring injury last season, will once again be sidelined this month. The Man Utd manager also revealed that Noussair Mazraoui and Benjamin Šeško will not be fit in time for Saturday's clash.
Šeško was among the players who pulled out of international duty, though there is greater optimism surrounding England pair Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford. Amad Diallo is also nearing a return, while Carlos Baleba is set to make his debut for the club.
With Šeško unavailable, Matheus Cunha is expected to lead the line for United.
Man Utd predicted lineup vs. Tottenham (4-2-3-1): Lammens; Dalot, Maguire, Martínez, Shaw; Baleba, Mainoo; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Rashford; Cunha.

Tottenham came through the international break largely unscathed in terms of injuries, with De Zerbi confirming that Dutch defensive pair Jan Paul van Hecke and Micky van de Ven are both available for the trip to Old Trafford.
Van Hecke withdrew from Xavi Hernández's Netherlands squad with a foot complaint, while Van de Ven has been managing a hand issue.
Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski will travel with the squad but are not expected to feature. Porro picked up a hamstring injury before the break, and Kulusevski is edging towards a long-awaited return. The Swede has been absent since May 2025, yet remarkably still made a Premier League appearance more recently than James Maddison.
The English No. 10 missed the majority of last season with an ACL injury and is being carefully managed at the start of 2026–27. De Zerbi revealed he suffered a further fitness setback during the break but is still anticipated to play a role at the Theatre of Dreams.
Xavi Simons, Wilson Odobert and Mykhailo Mudryk remain unavailable for the visitors.
Tottenham predicted lineup vs. Man Utd (4-2-3-1): Kinsky; Gray, Van Hecke, Van de Ven, Udogie; Fernandes, Tonali; Sávio, Gallagher, Marmoush; Solanke.
