Man Utd Compile Extensive Midfield Target List to Bolster Ruben Amorim's Squad—Report

Manchester United are reportedly monitoring seven central midfielders in preparation for the upcoming summer transfer window, with plans to secure at least one "elite level" signing.

The midfield position has been a problematic area for United throughout this campaign, struggling to dominate matches as desired. Ruben Amorim has primarily deployed a two-player combination of Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes. While the Brazilian is experiencing a revival, he's not a sustainable long-term answer. The Portuguese captain would be more effective in an advanced position, whereas Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte have failed to sufficiently impress their manager.

United's desire to strengthen their midfield ranks is well-documented. The club was strongly connected with Brighton & Hove Albion's Carlos Baleba during the previous summer before being deterred by a substantial nine-figure price tag. Rumors linking them to Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton have also continued for multiple months.

ESPN reports that both talents remain on their radar and are being "evaluated" by the scouting team, along with newer target Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest.

The target list expands to seven names altogether. Initial evaluations have been conducted on Wolverhampton Wanderers pair João Gomes and André, while Stuttgart's Angelo Stiller and Atlético Madrid's Conor Gallagher have also attracted attention.

All would presumably command significant fees, but United are reportedly optimistic about having funds available after potentially selling high-wage earners Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho permanently. The goal is also to secure European qualification for next season, restoring UEFA income to the organization.

Moving in the transfer market before summer 2026 seems unlikely, with the more challenging and unpredictable January window to be navigated with extreme care.

Wingback Depth Also Required

The same report indicates that United are also seeking another wingback option. United have already acquired one such player since the Portuguese manager's arrival, signing Denmark international Patrick Dorgu from Lecce this January, but Amorim's tactical approach heavily relies on effective wing backs. Securing additional quality in wide positions is therefore crucial.

It remains unclear at present which specific players the club might be pursuing to solve this need, though "inquiries" about various players' availability have been conducted.
