Man Utd Crumble Against Como: Red Devils Suffer Devastating Meltdown In Shameful Defeat

The heat is intensifying on embattled Michael Carrick after Manchester United suffered a humiliating 4–1 defeat to Como in the Champions League, stretching their winless run to seven games across all competitions.

Heavy rainfall briefly raised the prospect of a postponement at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, but the wet conditions offered no comfort to the Red Devils. They fell behind within just two minutes as lethargic defending gifted Nico Paz the opportunity to curl a stunning effort into the top corner.

Como thoroughly dominated United for the remainder of the opening half in northern Italy. The visitors managed only three shots—none on target—and rarely strung together meaningful spells of possession. On the few occasions they ventured forward, they posed absolutely no threat to the Como goal.

Carrick made adjustments at the interval, introducing two substitutes and switching to Ruben Amorim's much-discussed 3-4-2-1 system. However, the tactical change quickly proved counterproductive as Como cut through United's defense and Anastasios Douvikas fired a second past Senne Lammens.

Paz was once more the tormentor-in-chief just before the hour mark, putting the result beyond any doubt by intercepting Carlos Baleba's pass and coolly slotting home Como's third. The misery was complete for the visitors in the 76th minute when Jacobo Ramón headed in a fourth, though Joshua Zirkzee did manage a consolation strike deep into stoppage time.

United have now accumulated just three points from three league phase outings and face some serious reflection ahead of Sunday's Premier League home fixture against Bournemouth.

One Thing We Can't Ignore

"We could've shown more courage on the ball and taken it under pressure," Harry Maguire vented following United's weekend stalemate with Leeds United. "But we're in a situation where we're not as bold as we need to be, and we have to rediscover that because to win matches for United, we need that bravery and composure."

The defender's recent calls for greater boldness clearly went unheeded, with his teammates displaying the same familiar sluggishness and lack of ambition that has defined their wretched start to the campaign.

United struggled from the very first whistle. Their sluggish opening handed Paz the chance to score his opener, and there was no sign of improvement as the game progressed. Como were consistently a step ahead, circulating the ball with impressive speed and accuracy. Blue shirts glided past their opponents, finding pockets of space with ease as United's disorganized press failed to apply any meaningful pressure.

In possession, the same old problems resurfaced. No penetration, limited movement, positional confusion, and a stream of wayward passes—every weakness that has plagued United throughout the opening two months of the season was on full display once again.

Matters deteriorated further after the break as Carrick's restless tinkering produced a failed formation change. Within 12 minutes of the restart, United had shipped two more goals as Como, guided by Carrick's opposite number Cesc Fàbregas, thoroughly embarrassed the record Premier League champions.

United were outfought, outmuscled, and outthought as they failed to match the intensity and drive of their hosts. There is simply no hiding place after such a shambolic performance.

Man Utd Player Ratings vs. Como (4-2-3-1)

Andrey Santos

*Ratings provided by FotMob*

GK: Senne Lammens—6.6: Repeatedly let down by the catastrophic defense in front of him. At least managed to produce a handful of saves.

RB: Diogo Dalot—5.3: Regularly beaten by Martin Baturina and the marauding Álex Valle, before shifting to left wingback at the interval. The positional switch did little to lift his performance, however.

CB: Matthijs de Ligt—5.1: A first outing in 11 months was riddled with errors, most notably losing Douvikas completely as he doubled Como's lead. A far from welcome return to action.

CB: Harry Maguire—7.1: Maguire ought to have tracked Paz more closely as he bent his opener past Lammens, but, somewhat grimly, he was actually among United's more reliable performers on the night.

LB: Noussair Mazraoui—4.7: A difficult stint at left back was followed by an equally poor spell in central defense after the break. A thoroughly disappointing evening.

CM: Mason Mount—6.2: Como steamrolled United in the middle of the park, and Mount's limited defensive awareness certainly played into the hosts' hands.

CM: Andrey Santos—6.4: Off the pace, to say the least. Booked for a reckless challenge on Paz midway through the first half—a moment that perfectly summed up a labored display.

RW: Bryan Mbeumo—6.5: Mbeumo squandered several big opportunities in last week's loss to Atlético Madrid, but there were no such chances to miss on this occasion. Completely ineffective.

AM: Youri Tielemans—7.1: Pushed extremely high up the pitch, frequently operating alongside Bruno Fernandes in an unconventional 4-2-4 shape during the first half. It failed to click, though, with United toothless in attack and vulnerable in midfield.

LW: Matheus Cunha—6.3: Contributed virtually nothing before being unsurprisingly hauled off at halftime.

ST: Bruno Fernandes—6.4: The false nine role simply does not suit Fernandes. United needed their skipper involved in play as often as possible, yet his advanced positioning isolated him from his teammates. He was also surprisingly sacrificed in the 66th minute.

SUB: Carlos Baleba (46' for Santos)—6.3: The midfielder's errant pass handed Paz his second goal of the evening. Also picked up a booking during a forgettable cameo.

SUB: Amad Diallo (46' for Cunha)—7.8: Injected much-needed energy and looked dangerous in and around the penalty area. Set up Zirkzee's goal and was comfortably the standout performer for the away side.

SUB: Joshua Zirkzee (66' for Fernandes)—6.9: Took his goal with real composure.

SUB: Harry Amass (79' for De Ligt)—6.0

SUB: Shea Lacey (85' for Mbeumo)—N/A

Subs not used: Karl Darlow (GK), Tom Heaton (GK), Daniel Armer, Jaydan Kamason, Fletcher, Jack Fletcher, Tynan Thompson.
