Man Utd Drops the Hammer on Lisandro Martinez Following Explosive Outburst

Manchester United are said to have issued a fine to center back Lisandro Martínez following his public outburst against club executives earlier this week.

In the wake of Tuesday's 2–0 loss to Atlético Madrid, an incensed Martínez implied that those in charge of transfers should shoulder greater responsibility for the club's recent poor form, arguing the squad had not been properly equipped for success despite a strong finish to the 2025–26 season.

An extensive social media post saw Martínez admit that frustration may have clouded his judgment, yet stopped short of offering an apology. United had to wait until Thursday to receive one, when Martínez published a follow-up statement declaring the matter was now "behind us."

Should Man Utd Look to Sell Lisandro Martínez?

BBC Sport reports that moving forward also involves a financial penalty for Martínez, who accepted the formal disciplinary action for his comments directed at the club's leadership.

Manager Michael Carrick will therefore be able to select Martínez for Sunday's Premier League clash with Leeds United, though the exact role the Argentine international will play remains unclear.

Despite United's Insistence, This Saga Is Not Over

United are, understandably, eager to put this episode behind them, but the repercussions are likely to linger well into 2027.

At the heart of the matter is Martínez, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season. United do hold an option to extend it by an additional 12 months and would likely exercise it to protect his market value, but finding a way to retain him beyond next summer will prove difficult given his evident dissatisfaction with the club's current trajectory.

That storyline has spread rapidly over the past several days and will undoubtedly have appeared on the social media feeds of top players around the world, some of whom may now think twice about joining United if their ambitions are as high as those openly expressed by Martínez.
