Man Utd Eyes Stunning Return for Former Midfield Star as Amorim Drops Bombshell About Kobbie Mainoo's Future
Manchester United are reportedly exploring the possibility of bringing back Everton midfielder James Garner as they plan significant changes to their squad.
Head coach Ruben Amorim has shown strong preference for his midfield duo of Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro, with the Brazilian veteran nearing the end of his lucrative deal that's unlikely to be extended under current financial terms.
Both Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte seem to have failed to win over Amorim, who has openly stated the need for midfield reinforcements. While expensive options such as Brighton & Hove Albion's Carlos Baleba and Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson have captured media attention, the Daily Mail reports United might pursue an alternative approach by targeting Garner.
The 24-year-old Garner was considered a promising talent during his academy days at United and, following successful loan periods with Watford and Nottingham Forest, joined Everton in summer 2022 for approximately £15 million ($20.3 million).
After 103 matches, Garner is now in the last six months of his Everton deal. While the Toffees possess a 12-month extension option, they prefer negotiating a lengthy new contract to eliminate uncertainty about his future.
Discussions between Everton and Garner are underway, but United are reportedly prepared to make a January move for what could be a cost-effective transfer due to his contract situation.

Amorim: Mainoo the Future of Man Utd
Should Garner arrive in January, it would intensify the battle for playing time that has already left Mainoo frustrated.
After having his summer loan request rejected, Mainoo is anticipated to seek another departure from Old Trafford in January, though this desire might be blocked following Fernandes's recent injury setback.
Amorim has consistently supported his limited deployment of Mainoo and dismissed claims that he has lost confidence in the 20-year-old.
"He will be Manchester United's future," Amorim declared. "That's my conviction. So you [Mainoo] simply need to be patient for each opportunity and everything can shift in football within 48 hours. He will get the chance he always has to earn his place.
"In Casemiro's role [No. 6], he's capable. He can feature if we deploy three midfielders. He can operate in Mason Mount's position [No. 10] as well."
Toby Collyer Recalled From West Brom Loan—Report

United have already taken midfield action before the January window, bringing back 21-year-old Toby Collyer from his West Bromwich Albion loan spell, according to The Athletic.
Collyer has returned to United for treatment of a calf problem expected to sideline him for two months, after which he won't rejoin West Brom.
Playing time proved challenging for Collyer at West Brom, with his limited chances becoming a talking point during Amorim's notable press conference last week. He featured in 12 matches for the Baggies, with just three as a starter.
Following Collyer's recovery, his future will be determined. He might remain at Old Trafford, having made 13 appearances under Amorim previously, though several Championship clubs are reportedly interested in securing his services on loan.
