Manchester United icon and former midfielder Paul Scholes has sharply disagreed with Wayne Rooney's stance on a retrospective Premier League title, calling himself a "greedy b------" who would gladly take an additional medal at Manchester City's expense.
Following City's bombshell guilty verdict in their Premier League case involving widespread financial misconduct allegations, one of the most heated topics of debate has been a re-examination of past seasons.
City were found to have misrepresented their revenues by over $1.2 billion (£900 million) across nine seasons spanning 2009–10 to 2017–18. During that stretch, the Etihad club claimed three league championships, the first of which was dramatically snatched from a Manchester United squad featuring both Rooney and Scholes on the final kick of the 2011–12 campaign.
Rooney has stated that he "wouldn't feel comfortable" accepting a medal for that title. "I don't think we deserve it. We didn't do enough that season to win the league," he said.
Scholes, however, sees things differently.
"Keep hearing ex-teammates saying they want trophies taking off them but they don't want their medals..." Scholes posted on social media, "f--- that I'm a greedy b------ I want my medal."
Boasting 11 league titles to his name, the Manchester United academy product already ranks as the second-most decorated player in Premier League history, trailing only his former teammate Ryan Giggs by two. A twelfth top-flight triumph would draw Scholes level with the combined tally of a certain Lionel Messi — who claimed 10 La Liga crowns and two Ligue 1 titles — yet it seems his appetite for silverware remains far from satisfied.
