Antonio Valencia has added his name to the growing roster of former elite players who have brought their skills to English amateur side Wythenshawe Vets.
Valencia is most celebrated for his decade-long stint at Manchester United, where he made 339 appearances for the Red Devils and claimed two Premier League titles between 2009 and 2019. The Ecuadorian international hung up his professional boots two years after leaving United, but has now put pen to paper with Wythenshawe at the age of 40.
"As a community club with over 80 teams across men's, women's and junior football, it's always great for our players, volunteers and fans to see a player who has competed at the very top level spending time around the club and being part of the environment we're continuing to build," Wythenshawe told BBC Sport.
Wythenshawe Vets play in the Cheshire Vets League Premier Division, a competition open to players aged 35 and above, and were sitting at the summit of the table upon Valencia's arrival, having swept through all seven of their opening fixtures with a remarkable goal difference of +54.
A glance at their official squad list may well shed some light on that.

Valencia, who transitioned from winger to defender over his career, accumulated 325 Premier League appearances across his time at United and Wigan Athletic, yet there remains one player at the club who boasts even greater experience in England's top division.
That distinction belongs to Emile Heskey, who netted 110 goals across 516 Premier League outings with Leicester, Liverpool, Birmingham City, Wigan and Aston Villa, while also earning 62 England caps throughout a distinguished career.
Leicester City fan favourite Marc Albrighton slots into third place with 310 appearances, just ahead of former Everton and Manchester City centre-back Joleon Lescott. Another ex-City stalwart, midfielder Stephen Ireland, is also part of the setup.
Among the more unexpected names in the squad are former Wigan defender Maynor Figueroa and the Senegalese attacking pair of Papiss Cissé and Oumar Niasse, who previously represented Newcastle United and Everton respectively.
Former Chelsea and Leicester midfielder Danny Drinkwater is another player with a title to his name, while Burnley and Hull City stalwart George Boyd plays a key role in the team's performances. Nedum Onuoha, Cameron Jerome and Jefferson Montero also contribute considerable top-level experience to the squad.
