Man Utd Icons Clash in Heated Debate Over Carrick's Managerial Future

Manchester United icons Wayne Rooney and Roy Keane held contrasting views on whether Michael Carrick deserves to become the club's permanent manager following his successful interim tenure.

Carrick has guided United to seven victories in nine matches as caretaker boss, accumulating 22 points from 27 available to strengthen the team's position against Aston Villa, Liverpool and Chelsea in the race for Champions League spots.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live following United's victory over Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday, Rooney expressed that he "anticipated" this remarkable improvement when Carrick initially took charge and believes he "absolutely" merits a full-time appointment for next season.

"I'm familiar with him personally. I understand his nature and temperament. The situation required a steady influence, yet someone with knowledge of the institution. The squad needed support, and he has provided exactly that," Rooney explained.

"We've witnessed the players perform with greater skill, more cohesively as a unit, and they appear to be a formidable side. What reason would there be to make changes?"

Carrick quickly delivered outstanding displays against Manchester City and Arsenal from the outset in January, bringing back fundamental principles and implementing the traditional 'United approach' celebrated for generations.

While not every match has reached that standard, positive outcomes have generally continued, which represents a crucial quality in top-tier football and typically characterizes championship-winning sides.

Keane, whose United tenure didn't coincide with Carrick's playing days, holds a contrasting viewpoint. The forthright former skipper, who was publicly criticized by Carrick's spouse over ten years ago creating unexpected tension that appears to persist today, stated he expects the current caretaker will receive the position but wouldn't personally select him due to supposedly "superior candidates" available elsewhere.

"I would expect [Carrick to become permanent manager] but I wouldn't [offer him the position]," an unwavering Keane declared during post-match analysis of United's recent victory on Sky Sports.

"I believe superior alternatives exist. Regarding the matches where he's taken charge and concerning winning games, he's performed excellently. He's clearly streamlined operations but there's been no pressure in those fixtures," the Irish pundit argued.

While acknowledging "favorable circumstances" and extended breaks between fixtures have contributed to positive results, Keane mentioned he would "acknowledge" Carrick if appointed as permanent manager.

"[Three months earlier], nobody would've considered him a contender but due to circumstances, he's received a chance and is performing admirably. Most players respond well to interim management. His responsibility recently has been securing victories. I understand that's any manager's duty but he hasn't faced additional pressures typical of permanent management."

Carrick, also a former United captain who worked under both José Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjær before his sole previous senior coaching role at Middlesbrough, lacks sufficient experience according to Keane's assessment. Nevertheless, for perspective, Zinedine Zidane and Pep Guardiola had no first-team management background before assuming control at Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively.

The previously mentioned Mourinho also lacked trophy wins or European leadership experience before Porto appointed him, yet he immediately led them to consecutive UEFA Cup (Europa League) and Champions League victories in 2002–03 and 2003–04.

Keane remains firm: "I believe managing Manchester United requires someone significantly more seasoned regarding trophy success, European competition and he lacks that background. He may develop that expertise in coming years, and could be considered then. However, his current winning streak naturally enhances his prospects [for immediate appointment]."

While Carrick leads the race for permanent appointment following an excellent trial period, Keane mentioned Diego Simeone, Luis Enrique and Thomas Tuchel when asked to elaborate on the "superior alternatives" he referenced.

Tuchel, who was considered during summer 2024 when United chose to retain Erik ten Hag, may no longer be available after recently extending his England management contract.

Simeone has one more year remaining on his Atlético Madrid deal beyond this season but has been established in Madrid's red district for nearly 15 years. Meanwhile, Enrique is allegedly targeted by Paris Saint-Germain for a new agreement through 2030.

Therefore, it remains uncertain how accessible these latter two candidates—still considerable risks even if either becomes a genuine possibility—might prove to be.
