Man Utd Icon's Emotional Tribute as Son Makes Dream Old Trafford Debut

Wayne Rooney shared his emotions on social media regarding the immense pride he experienced watching his eldest son Kai make his debut appearance at Old Trafford on Friday night, coming on as a substitute for Manchester United's Under-18 squad.

Despite being just 16 years old, Rooney Jr was brought into the game by Darren Fletcher during extra time of an FA Youth Cup match against Derby County. With the game remaining scoreless after the standard 90 minutes, Kai Rooney entered the field sporting the No. 18 jersey that his father had previously worn during his early days at Everton.

United quickly took the lead through an unfortunate own goal before Chido Obi, one of the "privileged" youth players who had recently drawn criticism from Ruben Amorim, extended their advantage. A late strike from the away team wasn't enough to prevent United from securing their place in the quarterfinals.

Wayne Rooney, alongside his spouse Coleen and Manchester United's first-team assistant coach Michael Carrick, were part of the 2,223 spectators who witnessed the 2–1 victory. Following this memorable moment, Rooney Sr shared two photographs on X the next morning, showing Kai playing for the U18s alongside an image of his son from nearly ten years ago walking onto the Old Trafford pitch during his own professional career. "Then and now," he captioned. "Proud of you Kai."

This marked Kai's third match for the U18 team. Fletcher, who previously played alongside Rooney and maintains a strong friendship with the family, gave him his first opportunity at this level in August when he was merely 15. During the younger Rooney's second appearance for United's U18s, he netted the final goal in a commanding 5–0 victory over Middlesbrough.

Kai's progression was interrupted by a significant injury that required his right foot to be placed in a protective cast and necessitated the use of crutches. Friday's cup encounter marked his return to action following this challenging five-month recovery period.

Wayne Rooney had already established himself as a Premier League player and goalscorer at age 16, but remains cautious about placing excessive expectations on his son.

"He benefits from excellent coaching at Manchester United, so I maintain a hands-off approach," Rooney Sr explained to BBC News NI in July. "I communicate with him, but my focus centers on his mental approach and attitude, ensuring he continues to find joy in the game—that's my primary concern."

The limited guidance that Rooney has chosen to provide his son has focused on his preparation work beyond the supervision of United's coaching team.

"I'm fortunate with my living situation as I have a small training area available, and when the children say, 'We're going on the pitch,' their only intention is to aim for the top corners," he shared on The Wayne Rooney Show during this season.

"So when I tell them about my younger days, I recall creating a small target area to practice passing accuracy and simply playing against the wall. I maintain a similar philosophy, [telling them], 'You must develop your pace, you must improve your technical skills and ball control.' Otherwise, you simply go out thinking, 'Watch me strike the ball into the top corner.'"
