Man Utd Land First Summer Signing Who Can't Wait to Team Up With Michael Carrick

Manchester United have completed the signing of Andrey Santos as their first summer acquisition, formally kicking off a midfield overhaul as the Red Devils pay Chelsea a guaranteed £48 million ($64.3 million), with a further £2 million ($2.7 million) potentially available through performance-related add-ons.

Santos featured in 43 games for Chelsea last season across all competitions, having previously caught the eye during an 18-month loan spell at affiliated club Strasbourg. The 22-year-old Brazilian was still a teenager when he originally joined Stamford Bridge back in 2023.

His deal at United runs for an initial five years, with a club option to extend through to 2032.

"Everything about Manchester United is special," Santos said in the club's official statement. "It is an incredible feeling to join a club that some of my greatest idols have played for.

"As a midfielder, I am truly excited to have the chance to learn under Michael Carrick — he is the ideal coach to help me reach the next level in my career and pursue my ambitions.

"Everyone spoke to me about how driven this club is and the fantastic atmosphere that has been built here. I know how formidable this squad is and I can't wait to work together and compete for the biggest honours."

Santos is also expected to be joined imminently by Youri Tielemans, arriving from Aston Villa.

Man Utd, Chelsea Transfers Relatively Frequent

Despite being fierce rivals throughout the Premier League era, the transfer route between Chelsea and Manchester United has been travelled fairly regularly by both clubs.

Unlike the relationship between Manchester United and Liverpool, these two sides have shown no reluctance to conduct business with one another when there is mutual benefit to be had.

Alejandro Garnacho made the move from Old Trafford to Stamford Bridge as recently as last summer, while Mason Mount completed the reverse journey in 2023. United sent Jadon Sancho to Chelsea on loan for the 2024–25 campaign and broke their transfer record in 2014 to bring in Juan Mata.

Nemanja Matić, Juan Sebastián Verón and Mark Hughes have all made the switch between the two clubs as well.
