Newcastle United left back Lewis Hall is reportedly set to stay at St James' Park this summer, dashing Manchester United's hopes of luring the 21-year-old to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have had a relatively subdued summer window thus far, having only brought in Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Karl Darlow. The club also welcomed Marcus Rashford back to the fold after his loan stint at Barcelona came to an end.
There is still plenty of work ahead if United are to mount a title challenge next season, with Michael Carrick still hunting for an additional midfielder and a left back. Hall had been the primary target to strengthen the left side at Old Trafford, but he appears destined to stay on Tyneside.
"I do not expect Lewis Hall to be coming to Man United," journalist David Ornstein disclosed on The Athletic FC podcast. "Following the departure of Eddie Howe, Newcastle will be more determined to keep him, maybe even tie him down to a new contract."
Hall, who turns 22 in September, is contracted to Newcastle through June 2029. It comes as little surprise that the club is reluctant to sell the youngster, given that it has already lost Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur, with Bruno Guimarães seemingly on his way to Arsenal.
That's without mentioning the Magpies' farewell to Alexander Isak last September, a blow that played a part in the side's 12th-place Premier League finish in 2025–26. Add Howe's resignation to the mix and Newcastle, now under the stewardship of Matthias Jaissle, are undoubtedly craving stability this summer—with retaining Hall being a central pillar of the club's future plans.
Carrick Left Scouring for Other Transfer Targets
Should United find themselves unable to secure a deal for Hall, they will need to explore alternative options in the transfer market. At 31 years old and with a lengthy injury record, Luke Shaw cannot be the sole natural left back at Carrick's disposal.
The Englishman undoubtedly delivered one of his finest seasons in recent memory last campaign, but with Champions League football returning to the schedule, there is simply no way Shaw can shoulder the burden alone. Right backs Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui, along with centre backs Ayden Heaven and Lisandro Martínez, can offer cover, but United require a dedicated first-team left back following Tyrell Malacia's exit.

The Red Devils have already been connected with Fulham left back Antonee Robinson, who is coming off an impressive World Cup with the U.S. men's national team. The 28-year-old boasts six seasons of Premier League experience and could serve as a reliable short-term solution while United pursue Hall or another young prospect down the line.
On the subject of Premier League pedigree, Tyrick Mitchell is well-seasoned having spent his entire career at Crystal Palace. The 26-year-old also has an enviable injury record; across the last three seasons, he racked up 141 appearances for the Eagles, contributing to their 2024–25 FA Cup and 2025–26 Conference League triumphs along the way.
A younger and less established alternative is El Hadji Malick Diouf, who was linked with a move to United earlier this year. The 21-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough season at West Ham United, who will compete in the Championship next term following their relegation.
