Middlesbrough's central midfielder Hayden Hackney has declared he won't be departing the club during the January transfer window despite attention from Manchester United, choosing instead to concentrate on his ambition of securing promotion.

United are believed to have maintained long-standing interest in the 23-year-old Hackney, with speculation about a potential January move resurfacing following former Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick's return to the Old Trafford coaching staff last month.

The midfield position remains a key target area for United heading into 2026, however Hackney has stated he won't be transferring to Old Trafford—or any other destination—ahead of Monday's transfer deadline.

"Absolutely not," he responded when questioned about a potential exit. "I'm genuinely content here.

"The gaffer [Kim Hellberg] has me performing in a style that suits me perfectly, bringing out my best qualities. So yes, I'm thoroughly enjoying myself. This has been my aspiration since childhood, representing Middlesbrough.

"And considering our current league position, provided we maintain our momentum, we're feeling optimistic. Achieving promotion with Middlesbrough would be absolutely everything to me. I can't imagine how I'd react, but I know I'd be ecstatic. That's the ultimate goal."

Although no new signings may arrive at Old Trafford before Monday's deadline, United are actively planning for what promises to be an eventful summer transfer period.

Regarding midfield reinforcements, United are anticipated to make "substantial" investments with multiple new acquisitions, as both budget and squad space become available following Casemiro's expected exit.

Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton, Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson and Brighton & Hove Albion's Carlos Baleba represent high-value prospects who could each command fees approaching £100 million ($137 million).

Beyond this primary trio, Hackney remains among those consistently linked, with Carrick presumably providing strong recommendations for a player he utilized in 104 matches across all competitions during the 2022–23 through 2024–25 seasons.
