Man Utd Must Seal These Four Crucial Signings Alongside Ederson Transfer

Manchester United are closing in on their first summer signing as another potentially transformative transfer window begins to take shape.

Money was spent wisely last summer as the Red Devils overhauled their attacking line and reinforced their goalkeeping position. With Michael Carrick now confirmed as permanent manager, United can focus entirely on strengthening his squad ahead of the upcoming campaign.

The return of Champions League football and heightened expectations demand the club operate efficiently in the market, and they have made an encouraging start by nearing the completion of a £38 million ($51 million) deal for highly-regarded Atalanta midfielder Éderson.

Landing the Brazilian is merely the opening move for United, who must assemble a squad capable of balancing European and domestic commitments next season.

Here are four players the Red Devils should pursue after securing Éderson.

Lewis Hall

A new left back looks increasingly likely for United. Tyrell Malacia's impending departure, Patrick Dorgu's positional versatility and Luke Shaw's persistent injury issues during fixture-heavy spells mean Carrick requires another option in that position, and Premier League Young Player of the Season nominee Lewis Hall stands out as the primary target.

The 21-year-old has flourished since making the move from Chelsea to Newcastle United, with three impressive seasons at St. James' Park earning him considerable Premier League and Champions League experience. An attack-minded player with the required defensive tenacity, he ranks among the most exciting fullbacks in the division.

Newcastle are preparing for a potential summer exodus and Hall could be among those departing. A substantial fee would be necessary, likely in the region of £60 million ($80 million), but players of such exceptional promise rarely come at a discount—particularly from fellow top-flight clubs.

Adam Wharton

United identified at least two central midfielders as summer priorities. Éderson represents the first arrival, but an even larger outlay will be required for the second.

Casemiro's exit and Manuel Ugarte's continued struggles leave Carrick short of quality in the middle of the park. Kobbie Mainoo represents the club's long-term future, but the options surrounding him remain underwhelming. Deploying Bruno Fernandes or Mason Mount in a double pivot is far from an ideal solution.

Éderson shares some of Casemiro's combative qualities without being a pure enforcer, giving United the freedom to invest heavily in a technical midfielder to complement him and Mainoo. With Elliot Anderson increasingly tipped to join Manchester City, Adam Wharton could be the ideal deep-lying playmaker to elevate United's creative output, the composed Englishman heading into the summer on the back of Conference League glory with Crystal Palace.

At just 22, Wharton is a remarkably polished operator and has already accumulated close to a hundred appearances for Palace since arriving in relative obscurity in early 2024. Unsurprisingly, a nine-figure sum may be required to secure his services, but it would represent shrewd investment in one of football's most exciting emerging talents.

Bradley Barcola

One area of United's squad lacking a natural option is the left wing. Matheus Cunha has filled the role under Carrick with reasonable effectiveness, while Dorgu is another contender having impressed with a Gareth Bale-like positional switch in January before his extended injury layoff. However, with fixtures piling up next season, United require a dedicated specialist.

Bradley Barcola is among the names set to dominate transfer speculation this summer as his situation at Paris Saint-Germain grows increasingly uncertain. The French club's fourth-choice attacker may seek a fresh start in pursuit of regular minutes if he slips further down the pecking order should the European champions land transfer target Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig.

Should Barcola become available, the Red Devils would face fierce competition from rivals Liverpool, who are also pursuing Diomande, but United should leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of the France international. Barcola has contributed 50 goal involvements across the last two seasons, with blistering pace and graceful agility making him virtually unplayable at full speed.

The only concern is his valuation, which could reach approximately $134 million should PSG decide to cash in.

Jean-Philippe Mateta

United are reportedly interested in adding another centre forward, someone capable of pushing Benjamin Šeško while comfortably accepting a backup role. Proven pedigree will be crucial, which is precisely why Jean-Philippe Mateta presents such a compelling option.

The Frenchman, whose outstanding Palace performances earned him a place in Didier Deschamps's World Cup squad, has been a consistent scorer in the Premier League over several seasons, possessing the physicality, pace and finishing ability needed to excel in English football.

The 28-year-old, who also netted the decisive goal for Palace in the 2026 UEFA Conference League final, has registered 16 or more goals in each of the past three campaigns, and may be open to a slightly reduced role at a club of United's stature.

With his Palace deal expiring next summer, he could also be available at a more affordable price.
