Man Utd Player Ratings vs. Crystal Palace: Sesko Turns Back Time with Vintage 2023 Performance

Manchester United staged a remarkable comeback to defeat 10-man Crystal Palace 2–1 on Sunday afternoon, propelling themselves to third position in the Premier League standings for the first time since 2023.

Despite their strong recent run of results, Man Utd found themselves trailing at the interval following a lackluster display that was capitalized upon by Maxence Lacroix's early fourth-minute header from a set piece. The home side failed to mount any meaningful response before halftime as they found it difficult to break down Palace's defense.

The scorer Lacroix would inadvertently provide United with their pathway back into the contest, conceding a penalty and earning a red card for hauling down Matheus Cunha inside the box. Bruno Fernandes confidently converted the penalty to restore parity and provide Michael Carrick's team with crucial impetus.

Benjamin Šeško's superb header sealed the comeback and effectively ended the match as a competitive affair, as United comfortably secured a victory that elevates them above third-placed Aston Villa on goal difference.

Bruno Fernandes

Throughout an opening 45 minutes lacking in entertainment for the growing restless home crowd, it was solely United's captain who appeared determined to spark some action. Once more, Bruno Fernandes served as his team's primary creative outlet as he independently took the battle to Palace.

The Portuguese leader deservedly contributed to United's leveler, maintaining his composure from twelve yards to send Dean Henderson the wrong way, and it came as no shock to witness his precise delivery create their second goal. For the countless time this campaign, Fernandes rose to the occasion when his team required him most.

Benjamin Šeško was the fortunate beneficiary of Fernandes's excellent cross just past the hour mark and delivered his seventh strike of the calendar year with a skillful finish. Having wasted a comparable opportunity in the opening period, the Slovenian made no error on his second attempt as he directed his header into the net.

The summer acquisition is establishing himself as the consistent scorer of vitally important goals for United.

United struggled unnecessarily against the Eagles, particularly before the dismissal, and conceding early certainly suited Palace's game plan. Leny Yoro must accept responsibility for the opening strike as he was completely outfoxed by Lacroix, allowing the Frenchman to escape his attention at a corner after losing focus completely.

Ultimately, it provided Palace's hero-turned-villain with an uncontested opportunity on goal and highlighted how much United missed the reliable presence of injured pair Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martínez.

*Ratings provided by FotMob*

GK: Senne Lammens—6.7: Rarely troubled but responded well when occasionally called upon. Could do nothing about Lacroix's strike.

RB: Diogo Dalot—7.5: Worryingly careless with the ball early on but found things much easier when facing Palace's weary 10 men.

CB: Leny Yoro—6.8: Poor individual marking permitted Lacroix to break the deadlock with an unchallenged header. Yoro's lack of match sharpness created some anxious moments in the first half-hour.

CB: Harry Maguire—7.4: Engaged in a physical battle with Jørgen Strand Larsen and was seldom beaten by the imposing Norwegian.

LB: Luke Shaw—6.0: Extended his streak of starting every Premier League fixture this season but was substituted due to injury during the first half.

DM: Casemiro—8.2: A regular menace in the penalty box from United corners and was characteristically aggressive in his defensive duties.

DM: Kobbie Mainoo—7.6: Kept things simple in possession, favoring basic short passes rather than attempting to pierce the Palace midfield and backline.

RW: Bryan Mbeumo—7.2: Typically energetic, trying to inject life into proceedings whenever he touched the ball, but couldn't make a significant impact on the match.

AM: Bruno Fernandes—9.2: Generated United's finest chances throughout the encounter as he outshone his colleagues. A goal and assist were richly deserved following another exceptional performance.

LW: Matheus Cunha—7.2: The Brazilian wasn't at his most elegant but still earned the penalty that dramatically altered the game's momentum.

ST: Benjamin Šeško—7.9: Restored to the starting eleven after his impactful substitute appearances and maintained his excellent scoring form with a classic striker's header. Now four goals in his previous five outings.

SUB: Noussair Mazraoui (24' for Shaw)—7.2: Mazraoui's reluctance to use his weaker foot hindered several attacking moves. Solid defensively, however.

SUB: Amad Diallo (75' for Šeško)—6.8: Brought some vitality from the substitutes' bench and tested Henderson's reflexes on one instance.

SUB: Ayden Heaven (85' for Maguire)—N/A
