Senne Lammens has suggested Manchester United players found former boss Ruben Amorim's methods overly complex, while current interim manager Michael Carrick has had the opposite impact.
Amorim was expected to transform the playing identity at the red side of Manchester when he was recruited from Sporting CP late in 2024. However, the 3-4-2-1 formation that had brought him glory in Lisbon never took hold with the squad he took over at Old Trafford.
Amorim ultimately presided over United's worst campaign in 51 years in 2024–25, and a disappointing—though not quite as dire—start to this season left him under mounting pressure. As speculation about behind-the-scenes unrest grew during the January transfer window, he was dismissed after United executives "had not seen enough signs of evolution or progress" under his leadership.
Enter Carrick's return to the club, and a run of seven victories, two draws and one loss across 10 matches has placed United in a strong position to return to the Champions League for the first time since 2023. A permanent appointment could be on the cards within months.
Clear and Direct Messaging Key
According to Lammens, the core of what Carrick has done is strip things back to fundamentals. That was evident in how United set up for his opening two fixtures against Manchester City and Arsenal, leaning on wide players and rapid transitions packed with the United 'DNA' that has been a major topic of discussion.
The goalkeeper stopped short of naming Amorim, but the nature of his praise for Carrick carries an implicit criticism of the Portuguese coach given the context.
"The first thing was [Carrick's] ability to make everything quite clear and [present] a direct message. He didn't make it too difficult for us," Lammens told The Athletic.

"Sometimes, managers put together a plan [that is] too complicated, and then some players don't buy in and it's difficult to get everyone on the same page. But from the very first game, it was quite clear what [Carrick] wanted.
"He wasn't asking for the most difficult things, but he was also able to let our players flourish in their strengths. At the back, keeping clean sheets is one of the most important things, and then our players further forward can make the difference. That's probably what has worked best."
Man Utd's Route Back to the Champions League

Clinching Champions League qualification would significantly boost Carrick's chances of landing the role permanently, with the financial rewards the UEFA competition brings also crucial to the club's economic health.
The Red Devils currently occupy third place in the Premier League table at this advanced stage of the season and, crucially, have no other distractions beyond their seven remaining league games. By contrast, Aston Villa are still involved in at least one other competition, while Liverpool and Chelsea remain active in two.
Six points separate United from Liverpool in fifth. While a top-four finish guarantees Champions League entry, fifth place is likely sufficient through a UEFA European Performance Spot allocated to the Premier League, and it's seven points back to Chelsea in sixth.
Five wins from United's final seven matches would secure at least a fifth-place finish — and that assumes Chelsea win all of their remaining league games. However, the struggling Blues have claimed just one victory in their last six Premier League outings, so the bar may well be lower. United and Chelsea are also set to clash at Stamford Bridge on April 18 in what amounts to a crucial six-pointer in the qualification race.
