Man Utd Players Rally Behind Michael Carrick, Urging Club to Hand Him the Permanent Role

Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo have both pointed to Michael Carrick's storied history as a Manchester United player as a central reason behind the squad's shared belief that the former midfielder is the "right man" for the permanent role.

The retired England international has dramatically turned United's results around since stepping into his second caretaker stint in mid-January. The Red Devils have collected 23 points from his 10 Premier League games in charge, the finest return of any side in the top flight during that stretch.

United are not just picking up results but also playing attractive football. A switch away from Ruben Amorim's intricate 3-4-2-1 system to a more familiar 4-2-3-1 with clear, direct instructions has steadied a badly floundering club.

Carrick's deal runs only through the end of the campaign and, having learned a hard lesson from prematurely extending Ole Gunnar Solskjær's contract, United are taking their time before committing to any long-term managerial appointment. Nevertheless, the players appear to have already made up their minds.

"We think he's the right man [to get the job]," Amad told reporters gathered at United's mid-season training camp in the Republic of Ireland.

Carrick Benefitting From Intangibles Amorim Never Had

The primary draw seems to be his background as a former Manchester United player. Carrick spent 12 seasons anchoring Old Trafford's midfield, racking up 464 appearances and winning every major honour available. Upon retiring in 2018, he transitioned straight into the club's coaching setup, receiving a whistle and some aspirin from then-boss José Mourinho.

While Amorim surpasses Carrick in terms of overall managerial experience and silverware, the fact that his achievements came solely in Portugal rather than in this particular corner of east Manchester is treated almost as a disqualifying factor.

Mbeumo also highlighted Carrick's understanding of "the journey" and "the DNA" of Manchester United. "I think it's been easier because he knew the 'house' so it has been great to work under him." Exactly what that translates to in practical terms remains somewhat vague.

The suggestion is that United is such a singular institution that only someone with a deep, intimate knowledge of the club's traditions can truly navigate its complexities. That logic, of course, did not ultimately save Solskjær.

Soft Touch Helps United's Cool-Headed Coach

Beyond simply knowing the layout of the training ground and the names of the staff, Carrick has earned praise for the more meaningful ability to genuinely connect with his players.

"He has not been here long but he has been doing very good and his relationship with the players is very good," Amad said warmly. Mbeumo echoed the sentiment: "He knows how to talk to us as well."

Bruno Fernandes offered a little more insight into what that communication looks like in a separate interview. "Michael came in with the right ideas of giving the players responsibility, but also some freedom to take the responsibility on the pitch for the decisions that are needed," the Portuguese playmaker explained.

"Sometimes you need this kind of manager [to] bring the club [to] where they belong," Amad said emphatically. "I think the club will decide at the end of the season [but] my honest opinion is we're really happy to have him as a manager and he's doing well."
