Manchester United rallied twice from two goals down to secure a stunning 4–4 draw with Aston Villa on Sunday, yet the result does little to ease the mounting uncertainty surrounding Michael Carrick's future as the November international break approaches.
A sensational comeback win against Roma had given Carrick at least one more game in charge, but the Red Devils were plunged back into despair within just four minutes of Villa's arrival. Rapid-fire goals from Alysson and Nicolas Jackson stunned the Old Trafford faithful, splitting the crowd between shell-shocked silence and frustrated jeers.
Yet, as had been the case on Tuesday, Bruno Fernandes stepped up from the penalty spot to ignite an impressive United fightback. The hosts poured forward relentlessly in pursuit of a deserved leveler, which finally arrived courtesy of Youri Tielemans just before the break, as he rifled home against his former employers.
History cruelly repeated itself early in the second half, however, as United shipped two more goals in rapid succession through more wretched defending. John McGinn put Villa back in front with a confident penalty, before Leon Goretzka converted from a scrappy set piece to leave the home side in serious trouble.
Another loss appeared certain as United entered stoppage time trailing by two, but Patrick Dorgu sparked a breathtaking turnaround. The substitute set up Joshua Zirkzee before heading home the equalizer from a corner, with the point sparing Carrick further embarrassment while leaving his side rooted to 18th in the Premier League standings.
The Problem That Won't Go Away

United found themselves in all-too-familiar territory as Jackson wheeled away in celebration in just the fourth minute. For the fifth consecutive match, they found themselves two goals in arrears—albeit more swiftly than ever before.
Never before had the Red Devils conceded two goals so early in a Premier League game, with more farcical defending proving their downfall. The ease with which Villa carved through their hosts for the opener was deeply concerning, if unsurprising, and a costly blunder from Senne Lammens was a gift they could ill afford to give.
Regardless of the opponent, competition, or venue, United simply cannot stop leaking goals.
Remarkably, the second half told a near-identical story, with United conceding two chaotic goals within the opening eight minutes after the restart. Diogo Dalot's reckless challenge gifted Villa the penalty that restored their lead, before some woeful defending handed Goretzka the easiest of finishes.
Carrick must naturally accept responsibility for United's worsening defensive record, yet his players continue to make elementary mistakes that appear destined to cost him his position. Should the 45-year-old ultimately be dismissed, his replacement's immediate priority will be overhauling a deeply flawed backline.
Man Utd Player Ratings vs. Aston Villa (4-2-3-1)

*Ratings provided by FotMob*
GK: Senne Lammens—5.3: Beaten through the legs for the first goal and then parried straight into Jackson's path for the second. Not for the first time this campaign, Lammens fell well short of the standards he established during his debut season.
RB: Noussair Mazraoui—7.1: Provided the assist for Tielemans's goal. Arguably the only bright spot he could draw from another dismal afternoon for United's defense—even if he wasn't the worst performer on the day.
CB: Leny Yoro—5.9: Inexplicably diverted the ball toward his own top corner as Goretzka completed Villa's fourth. A dreadful mistake that completely deflated United.
CB: Harry Maguire—6.3: Managed just two defensive contributions and completed only 74% of his passes before being hauled off at the interval.
LB: Diogo Dalot—5.6: Struggled to contain the lively Alysson throughout, failing to close him down as he opened the scoring and then conceding a penalty in the box. A thoroughly poor display from the fullback.
CM: Youri Tielemans—8.2: Hammered home United's equalizer and consistently created openings with his distribution from deep. However, his positioning in midfield afforded Villa considerable space on the break.
CM: Kobbie Mainoo—8.1: Did his utmost to hold United's leaky midfield and defense together. Simply cannot function effectively alongside Tielemans, though.
RW: Amad Diallo—7.3: Wasted several good opportunities in the first half and faded from view after the break. The Ivorian was similarly wasteful against Chelsea the previous weekend.
AM: Bruno Fernandes—8.7: Made no mistake from the spot this time, coolly sending Zion Suzuki the wrong way. Central to United's initial recovery and provided the assist for Dorgu's header.
LW: Matheus Cunha—8.2: The midweek hero ignited United's first-half revival with a surging run that won the penalty, and he was frequently his side's most dynamic attacking presence.
ST: Bryan Mbeumo—6.3: Completely cut off while leading the line, posing Villa's defense absolutely no threat whatsoever.
SUB: Ayden Heaven (46' for Maguire)—6.8: Unable to shore up United's struggling defensive unit.
SUB: Mason Mount (66' for Tielemans)—6.6: Showed some determination and spirit, at the very least.
SUB: Patrick Dorgu (66' for Dalot)—8.3: Delivered a superb cross to tee up Zirkzee before producing the equalizer with an unmarked header. What an impact!
SUB: Shea Lacey (66' for Amad)—6.3: Barely featured.
SUB: Joshua Zirkzee (82' for Mbeumo)—N/A
Subs not used: Karl Darlow (GK), Matthijs de Ligt, Andrey Santos, Jack Fletcher.
