Man Utd Ready to Lock Down Club Legend with New Contract Deal

Manchester United and Harry Maguire are reportedly engaged in discussions regarding a contract extension that would keep the defender at Old Trafford for more than seven years total.

Maguire set a record as the world's priciest defender—and United's second-largest signing at the time—when his £80 million ($106.4 million) transfer from Leicester City was finalized in 2019. To this day, no player has surpassed Maguire's fee in the global defender market.

He signed a six-year deal with an additional 12-month option that is set to run out at the conclusion of this season. Without the extension clause, his contract would have already ended.

Originally a central figure in Ole Gunnar Solskjær's United setup, Maguire has bounced back from the injury issues and poor form that previously plagued him. Despite losing the captain's armband to Bruno Fernandes in 2024, he appears to have reestablished his position as a vital squad member.

With domestic football on hold for international duty and Maguire absent from this month's England roster, Fabrizio Romano indicates that an in-person discussion occurred in "recent days."

Additional negotiations are anticipated, with United reportedly satisfied with Maguire's "contribution and leadership."

The former Sheffield United and Hull City defender rejected a potential transfer to West Ham United during summer 2024 despite an agreed fee, while reports from late that year first suggested "positive discussions" about a contract renewal in Manchester.

Reports in August revealed that three Premier League teams and two Serie A clubs had made inquiries earlier that summer regarding a possible Maguire move. These interested parties were told of United's intention to retain him, with the player's specific ambition being to follow in the footsteps of 1990s icons like Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister.

Maguire seemed to essentially validate that account later on. At that point, he wasn't dismissing the possibility of considering a January departure if no new deal materialized.

"I'm quite certain the club has made it clear this summer that I cannot leave on any conditions with other teams making inquiries about my situation and my contractual status," he stated.

"I'm confident that in the coming months they'll arrange meetings and we'll need to discuss our future direction and whether they wish to extend or the transfer window will reopen in January.

"Naturally I have certain thoughts about my desired path and aspirations. I prefer not to share everything publicly, but this is an incredible club to represent and you'd be foolish to want to leave at the first opportunity."
