Man Utd Set To Pocket Massive Savings As Casemiro Heads For The Exit Door

Manchester United are reportedly set to save up to $24 million (£18 million) in wages once Casemiro departs the club this summer—though the true cost of his absence in terms of on-field impact could prove even greater.

Casemiro joined United from Real Madrid in 2022 as one of the finest defensive midfielders of his era. The Brazilian international often recounts how the club's humiliating 4–0 thrashing at Brentford convinced him this was the right place to come and make a difference, though a generous wage package certainly smoothed the path to an agreement.

Should Manchester United secure a top-five Premier League finish, as anticipated, and qualify for the following season's Champions League, Casemiro would have been entitled to a salary increase of approximately $4 million, bringing his total potential earnings for 2026–27 to $24 million, according to The Athletic.

United reportedly hold the option to activate a one-year extension in Casemiro's contract if he reaches 35 appearances for the club this season—something still achievable if the 34-year-old features regularly for the rest of the campaign—but the Red Devils are not expected to act against their player's desire to move on.

Casemiro arrived at United during a turbulent chapter in the club's recent history. Worn down by years of underachievement following Sir Alex Ferguson's iconic reign, the club had been told by caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick that it required "open-heart surgery." Erik ten Hag proceeded to acquire the most expensive remedies on the market.

Despite arriving for a fee that could reach $93.2 million, Casemiro wasn't even United's priciest signing of 2022. That distinction belonged to the ill-fitting Antony. Nearly four years later, one of those acquisitions looks far more justified than the other.

As reported by The Athletic, Casemiro was believed to be earning $20 million in each season United spent outside the Champions League. Even though the five-time winner of the competition featured in Europe's premier tournament in just one of his four seasons at Old Trafford, he still ended up costing the club in excess of $176 million.

For context, that figure is nearly double the club-record transfer fee United paid for Paul Pogba, or roughly enough to cover nine months of Cristiano Ronaldo's wages at Al Nassr.

Casemiro Responds to Man Utd Fan Pleas of 'One More Year'

Casemiro

Casemiro has looked worth every penny in recent weeks. Benefiting from United's lighter fixture load, the veteran has turned back the clock with a string of commanding displays at both ends of the field. His recent performances have been of such high quality that Old Trafford supporters have begun chanting for the Brazilian to stay for "one more year." Those appeals, however, will go unanswered.

"I am still enjoying it a lot [in Manchester]," Casemiro told The Athletic following Brazil's 2–1 loss to France on Thursday. "I believe the announcement has now been made. It is huge, the affection that the fans have shown towards me.

"But I truly believe the decision is made and final. I am enjoying myself right now. I think there will be some difficult [emotional] moments in these [remaining] games at Manchester United."

Ruben Amorim was frequently criticized for what many saw as inflexibility during his time at Manchester United. Yet the opinionated Portuguese coach deserves some recognition for reversing his stance on Casemiro, welcoming the Brazilian back into the fold and allowing him to rediscover his best form.

That said, United's No. 18—much like the rest of the squad—has flourished even further under the interim guidance of Michael Carrick. Casemiro attributes the coach's background as a top-level midfielder to his own upturn in form. "Above all, Michael is a specialist in my position on the field, he was a truly great player," the Brazilian noted. "That makes everything much easier and he is always communicating with us.

"I feel like we are in a good dynamic right now in Manchester and my objective is to get the club back into the Champions League."
