Following last week's stumble to open the 2026–27 Premier League campaign, Manchester United kick off their home schedule against another side that has recently earned promotion.
Ipswich Town, much like Hull City, turned heads on Matchday 1 by defeating Sunderland 2–1, and have assembled a squad well-acquainted with Premier League demands. As a result, the Red Devils — still stinging from their struggles on the Humber — could face a stern test on Sunday afternoon against Gary O'Neil's outfit.
Consecutive losses, given the calibre of opposition, would mark a dreadful beginning to Michael Carrick's first complete season at the helm.
Here's how United could set up at Old Trafford.
Man Utd Predicted Lineup vs. Ipswich
GK: Senne Lammens—It appeared that Man Utd had finally found a worthy long-term heir to David de Gea in Lammens last season, and the Belgian is determined to show that his composed debut campaign was no one-off.
RB: Diogo Dalot—Dalot has his limitations, and United may come to regret not strengthening at right back as the campaign unfolds, but his energy and attacking instincts will be vital against what is likely to be a defensively compact Ipswich side.
CB: Harry Maguire—Maguire found himself marking teammates during the Hull defeat and will face a stiff challenge from Ipswich's summer striking addition, Emersonn, who narrowly got on the scoresheet on his Premier League debut last weekend.
CB: Ayden Heaven—United are still waiting for Lisandro Martínez to return to fitness, but he's not quite there yet. So, youngster Heaven will once again partner Maguire at the back.
LB: Luke Shaw—The Red Devils are actively seeking a left back before the summer transfer window closes. Should they find the right option, Shaw's position as first choice may not last much longer.
CM: Youri Tielemans—Tielemans struggled on his Premier League debut for the club, but Carrick is well aware of how pivotal the Belgian will be in matches like this throughout the campaign. He must help shoulder the creative load alongside Bruno Fernandes.
CM: Andrey Santos—The Brazilian wasn't particularly poor on an individual level, though many remain unconvinced that a Santos-Tielemans midfield pairing is sustainable. That partnership will face further examination on Sunday.
RW: Bryan Mbeumo—Mbeumo thrived as a No. 9 last season, but Amad Diallo's unavailability will likely push him out to the right wing.
AM: Bruno Fernandes—The reigning PFA Players' Player of the Year had a subdued outing at the MKM Stadium, and Fernandes will be eager to hit his stride in Gameweek 2. Opponents know that keeping the Portuguese maestro quiet is key to shutting down United as a whole.
LW: Marcus Rashford—Having pulled on a Manchester United shirt for the first time since December 2024 last weekend, Rashford could go a step further and earn a starting berth on Sunday. The winger made an impression from the bench at Hull City, registering four chances created in the second half — bettered only by Morgan Rogers, who managed five across the opening weekend.
ST: Matheus Cunha—Benjamin Šeško will continue his gradual return from a shin injury, and the striker-free shape should function more effectively with mobile runners flanking Cunha on both sides.
