Manchester United have unveiled their new red home kit for the 2026–27 season, a design that honors and commemorates the club's FA Cup victory in 1977.
Next May will mark the 50th anniversary of that historic achievement. Defeating bitter rivals Liverpool 2–1 in the final at the original Wembley Stadium gave United their first piece of silverware since making history as the first English club to win the European Cup nine years prior in 1968.
The new home shirt for next season brings back a collar for the first time since 2022–23. While manufactured by adidas, the striped detailing on the collar and sleeve cuffs is a clear nod to the iconic shirt worn in 1977, which was supplied by classic English brand Admiral.
That triumph also represented the club's first major honor following a shocking relegation from the top flight at the close of the 1973–74 season—still considered their worst campaign in nearly a hundred years. The Red Devils bounced back with immediate promotion to the First Division (as it was called before the Premier League era) and finished third the following year, while also reaching the FA Cup final, only to suffer a defeat against Second Division Southampton in one of Wembley's most memorable upsets.
In the 1977 final, Tommy Docherty's United side were heavy underdogs. A dominant Liverpool had just been crowned English league champions and would go on to win their first European Cup with a victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach in Rome.
United's FA Cup win, sealed by goals from Stuart Pearson and Jimmy Greenhoff around a Liverpool equalizer in a frantic opening to the second half, denied the Merseysiders a league, FA Cup and European Cup treble—a feat no English club had ever accomplished at that point. It would eventually be achieved 22 years later in 1998–99, ironically by Manchester United themselves, under the stewardship of Sir Alex Ferguson.
Why 2026–27 Kit Launch Is Unprecedented for Man Utd
While it's not unusual for Premier League clubs to unveil kits for the upcoming season in the final weeks of the current campaign before immediately switching to the new strips, Manchester United had never done so … until now.
The Red Devils have already made their final appearance in the 2025–26 home kit, fittingly doing so in the recent 3–2 victory over Liverpool that secured their return to the Champions League.
The new 2026–27 shirt will make its debut when Michael Carrick's side take to the pitch on Sunday for the second-to-last Premier League match of the season against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford. United will also close out the campaign wearing it away at Brighton & Hove Albion on May 24.
However, Sunday won't actually be the kit's first-ever appearance. United's women's team will earn that distinction as they conclude their Women's Super League season with a trip to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge the day before. Sadly for Marc Skinner's squad, what has been a landmark season highlighted by a run to the Women's Champions League quarterfinal is drawing to a close with little at stake, as a fourth-place finish—meaning no WCL qualification for 2026–27—has already been confirmed.
Manchester United's Under-18 side faces Manchester City in the FA Youth Cup on Thursday evening but will take to the field in the 2025–26 home kit.
