Man Utd Squander Golden Chances Against Atletico Madrid Despite Promising Display

Manchester United have now gone five matches without a victory across all competitions following a disappointing 2–0 loss to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Ironically, the Red Devils delivered a far more convincing display at the Metropolitano in the Spanish capital than they had in Sunday's 1–1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur, yet they still head back to the northwest of England empty-handed.

It was far from the beginning Michael Carrick had hoped for. World Cup winner Álex Baena burst forward down Atlético's left side, drawing the United backline toward him before squaring the ball into the box for Pablo Barrios. Ayden Heaven managed to get in the way and divert the shot, which appeared destined for the bottom corner, but the ball still crept through.

Barely a minute had elapsed, and Atlético continued to probe with balls in behind United's defense. Nevertheless, Bryan Mbeumo came close to leveling things up 12 minutes in, with his effort deflected wide after a neat nutmeg on Cristian Romero to engineer the opportunity. Shortly afterward, Marcus Rashford attempted to do better with a volley of his own.

The visitors had responded well to going behind, but Jan Oblak was well-positioned to deny both Mbeumo and Carlos Baleba's free header from the resulting corner around the midpoint of the first half. Even so, Atlético nearly doubled their lead when Álex Grimaldo struck the junction of post and crossbar with a whipped, curling free kick.

The hosts came even closer to extending their advantage when USMNT midfielder Johnny Cardoso fired into the bottom corner, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR review—the ball had struck the arm of Marcos Llorente in the build-up.

The second half began at a more measured pace until Julián Alvarez rattled the post with a volley nine minutes after the break. Almost immediately after, Bruno Fernandes agonizingly narrowly missed converting from Youri Tielemans's sweeping pass, guiding the ball just past the wrong side of the post.

The captain later struck the crossbar from range as United's pursuit of an equalizer continued, though substitutions from both sides began to interrupt the rhythm of the game.

While VAR had worked in United's favor in the first half, Carrick's side finished the match with 10 men after the referee was directed to review an aerial challenge between Leny Yoro and Jonathan David. The French defender was harshly judged to have denied a clear goalscoring opportunity when the Canadian went down under pressure.

With Yoro off the pitch, it took Atlético just five more minutes to seal the win. David played a central role, forcing Senne Lammens into a save that spilled a rebound to fellow substitute Ademola Lookman. Given the circumstances, there was no way back for United.

Two Things We Can't Ignore

Man Utd's Missed Chances

Bryan Mbeumo

The result ultimately came down to which side took their chances and which did not.

Lammens was kept far less busy than Oblak. Atlético's early opener wasn't technically classified as a 'big chance,' and with three-quarters of the match gone, the home side had yet to create one. Manchester United, by contrast, had fashioned four big chances by that point and squandered every single one. Two fell to Mbeumo, one to Rashford, and another to Fernandes. There is a genuine sense that they did enough to take something from the game.

But whether through greater composure or simply more confidence, Atlético did what the Red Devils could not—put the ball in the net.

Improvement in Midfield

Andrey Santos

A noticeably improved midfield performance appeared to be a key factor behind the better overall display.

With Kobbie Mainoo sidelined through injury and Fernandes shifted out wide, there was room to push Youri Tielemans into a No. 10 role and field a completely fresh central midfield partnership: Carlos Baleba and Andrey Santos.

This was a midfield that sacrificed some technical quality but crucially brought greater energy and physicality—attributes United have been sorely missing. Baleba's involvement had been held back by a preseason injury, while Santos has been a puzzling absentee on too many occasions. Both will be hoping this showing gives them a strong case for more regular starts.

Man Utd Player Ratings vs. Atletico Madrid (4-2-3-1)

Youri Tielemans

*Ratings provided by FotMob*

GK: Senne Lammens—7.0: A solid showing despite conceding on two occasions.

RB: Diogo Dalot—6.8: Caught out by Baena's run that set up the opening goal inside the first minute.

CB: Leny Yoro—6.4: Given a second straight start, this time in his preferred central role at the expense of Harry Maguire. Had largely performed well before the red card, which felt like a harsh punishment for what was a debatable call.

CB: Lisandro Martínez—7.2: The Argentine showcased his passing range, including creating a 'big chance' for Rashford in the opening half.

LB: Ayden Heaven—6.4: Not an outright error, but there's a question over whether he could have done more to prevent the Barrios goal from squeezing through.

CM: Andrey Santos—7.0: Just his third start since joining in the summer.

CM: Carlos Baleba—6.8: Both his first Champions League appearance and a full debut for the Red Devils. Won six of eight duels.

RM: Bruno Fernandes—7.2: The need for additional bodies in central areas pushed the skipper out to the flank. Playing through injury, he still came agonizingly close to scoring on two occasions.

AM: Youri Tielemans—6.5: Appeared more comfortable in this advanced role, having been exposed physically when deployed deeper. The extra space gave him more time on the ball and allowed his creativity to flourish.

LM: Marcus Rashford—6.0: His missed volley from a promising position in the first half was emblematic of a player short on belief and sharpness. Too peripheral throughout.

ST: Bryan Mbeumo—6.6: A couple of decent openings came and went. Must be sharper in front of goal.

SUB: Joshua Zirkzee (66' for Tielemans)—6.1

SUB: Amad Diallo (66' for Rashford)—6.8

SUB: Mason Mount (67' for Baleba)—6.9

SUB: Matheus Cunha (80' for Fernandes)—6.6

SUB: Harry Maguire (80' for Heaven)—6.0

Subs not used: Dermot Mee (GK), Karl Darlow (GK), Daniel Armer, Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Amass, Tyler Fletcher, Shea Lacey.
