Man Utd Stars Abandon International Duty as Club's Season Reaches Crucial Climax

Manchester United strikers Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Šeško have pulled out of international duty for Cameroon and Slovenia respectively this month due to fitness issues.

Mbeumo was substituted 20 minutes before full-time in Friday's 2–2 Premier League stalemate with Bournemouth and United state the choice for his absence from Cameroon's squad for non-competitive 'FIFA Series' fixtures against Australia and China is a "precautionary measure."

Slovenia also have only friendlies scheduled—instead of the World Cup qualifiers that 12 European nations are still involved in—and Šeško is sidelined with what seems to be an injury he has been managing at club level. His absence should "guarantee that he completely recovers from a problem that United have been cautiously handling over recent weeks."

The reality that neither Cameroon nor Slovenia, who will both be absent from the World Cup, has anything beyond honor at stake in the upcoming matches perhaps made the choices somewhat simpler for all involved.

Linking up with a national squad, fellow United player Noussair Mazraoui will now join Morocco after illness had temporarily raised questions about his participation. The Atlas Lions advance their World Cup preparations with friendlies against Ecuador and Paraguay.

There seems to be nothing concerning about either player missing their national team commitments.

Mbeumo and Šeško have both netted 10 goals for United this campaign—nine apiece in the Premier League. The former began the season in superior form following his transfer from Brentford but hasn't contributed to his total in the past six weeks. The latter was more of a gradual developer as he adapted to life in a new league and nation, but has found his rhythm with eight of his strikes in 2026 alone.

Both attackers being completely healthy for the concluding phase of the season following this international window will be vital to Manchester United's overall ambitions.

Champions League Qualification Within Reach

Losing points against Bournemouth might have been more of a blow for Michael Carrick's Red Devils in their quest for Champions League qualification. United remain third in the Premier League standings and fourth-place Aston Villa narrowed the gap to just one point, but losses for Chelsea and Liverpool during the weekend meant that the lead over both actually grew.

With England now highly likely to obtain a fifth Champions League spot after five clubs advanced to the quarterfinals across the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League last week, United's buffer over sixth-place Chelsea stands at seven points with just seven matches remaining.

Manchester United don't compete again until April 13, when Leeds United travel to Old Trafford. There follows a massively important and potentially decisive trip to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge five days afterward.

United also still need to welcome Liverpool at Old Trafford at the beginning of May, placing their Champions League qualification destiny squarely in their own control.
