Man Utd Strike Gold with Stunning $51 Million Summer Transfer Opener

Rasmus Højlund's time as a Manchester United player will come to an end when the summer transfer window opens, with the striker set to join Napoli permanently following the completion of his initial loan spell at the Serie A club.

Højlund made the move to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona back in September, with the loan deal containing an obligation for Napoli to convert it into a permanent transfer should the club secure Champions League qualification for the 2026–27 campaign.

That European berth was confirmed on Sunday. Napoli's commanding 3–0 victory at Pisa locked in a top-four finish with one game still remaining. Antonio Conte's men sit in second place, behind newly crowned champions Inter, and will hold that position as long as they avoid defeat at home to Udinese next weekend.

Rasmus Højlund

Højlund netted Napoli's third goal against Pisa deep into stoppage time, with that result activating a $51.2 million (£38.4 million) permanent deal set to be finalized in the weeks ahead. Unlike Marcus Rashford, whose future remains shrouded in uncertainty, the Danish forward's path is now clear—he will not be returning to Manchester United.

Højlund has been Antonio Conte's first-choice striker throughout the season, a role he largely inherited due to Romelu Lukaku's extended absence through injury. The 23-year-old has netted 11 Serie A goals, making this the most productive league campaign of his career—his tally of 15 across all competitions falls just one short of his total for Manchester United in 2023–24.

The transfer fee represents a notable financial loss for the Red Devils, who took a gamble on Højlund in the summer of 2023 by striking a deal with Atalanta worth an initial $81.9 million. They will recoup just over 60% of that investment—though recovering a meaningful fee for a player considered surplus to requirements following Benjamin Šeško's arrival remains a positive outcome.

Hojlund Delivers 'Emotional' Man Utd Farewell

Shortly after the final whistle of Napoli's victory, Højlund took to social media to mark a transfer that—in his own mind—had already happened last summer.

"This goal felt symbolic because it means two things. We now secured Champions League with Napoli, which means because of my contract I'm now officially a Napoli player and I'm saying goodbye to Manchester United," he wrote on Instagram. "That feels weird, because for the past year I already feel like a Napoli player. The way you fans supported me, made me feel like home and let me find my confidence again is something I'm so grateful for.

"To say goodbye to Manchester United is something that kinda feels emotional too. My childhood dream came true by playing at Old Trafford in a red jersey. So the goal today symbolizes a new confident start, in which I will give everything for the time ahead to Napoli, and a thank you to all the fans, players and staff of Manchester United who made the dream I had as a kid come true. It's time for new dreams, so let's chase them.

Who Will be Man Utd's Next No. 9?

Rasmus Højlund

Højlund's No. 9 shirt has not been worn since the final day of the 2024–25 Premier League season, a year and a week ago, and will soon be officially available.

It ranks among the most iconic numbers in the club's history—alongside No. 7—largely due to its enduring connection with Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton. However, it has also been worn by many other celebrated figures, including Jack Rowley, Tommy Taylor, Brian McClair, and Andy Cole.

Yet the fortunes of those donning it have declined sharply in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era. Radamel Falcao, on loan from Monaco in 2014–15, struggled to stay fit, while Anthony Martial delivered more disappointments than highlights across two stints with the number. Romelu Lukaku ultimately failed to live up to expectations, and Højlund actually had a stronger season when he switched to No. 11. Of the recent wearers, Zlatan Ibrahimović made the best case for it, bagging 28 goals during 2016–17.

With Højlund's departure imminent, the No. 9 shirt could find a new owner next season. The question is who, given that Manchester United are not anticipated to sign a striker this summer—central midfield, left wing, left back, and goalkeeper are all considered higher priorities.

Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Šeško

That points to the possibility of No. 9 being claimed by someone already in the squad. Bryan Mbeumo, currently wearing No. 19, could be a candidate, though he has a strong personal attachment to that number, having worn it at every club throughout his career. The more natural heir would be Šeško, though he selected his No. 30 jersey with clear intent, having worn it at both RB Leipzig and RB Salzburg. He has not worn No. 9 since representing Slovenia at U17 level.

There is also a possibility that No. 9 could be handed to an incoming left-wing signing. Yan Diomande has briefly worn it at senior international level for Côte d'Ivoire, while it would not be entirely unfamiliar to Rafael Leão given his history with Portugal's youth sides. Speculation is also mounting around Everton's Iliman Ndiaye, who has previously worn No. 29 for both Marseille and Sheffield United.
