Man Utd Target Champions League Star in Massive Midfield Overhaul

Manchester United are said to be preparing several "major" midfield acquisitions this summer, potentially including the signing of free agent Leon Goretzka.

Bayern Munich has officially announced that their vocal midfielder will depart when his contract concludes in June. Fabrizio Romano has linked United with interest in the 30-year-old Champions League victor. No "concrete" negotiations are believed to have commenced yet, and the Red Devils won't be the only club pursuing Goretzka. Similarly, Goretzka won't be United's sole midfield objective.

Romano enthusiastically stated that the Premier League powerhouse will "invest heavily" in midfield reinforcements during the summer window, with the possibility of two high-profile signings being entirely feasible. Goretzka would undoubtedly represent a compelling starting option.

Leon Goretzka

Goretzka has experienced the complete spectrum of highs and lows throughout his eight campaigns at Bayern Munich. Joining from Schalke in 2018 as a lean versatile player, the Germany international added significant muscle mass during the COVID-19 pandemic break. When he returned with his imposing new build, he had become a completely different player.

The newly powerful 6'2" midfield powerhouse described himself as "more confident and more physical." This was evident. "Entering aggressive tackles with that mindset provides me with greater assurance," he explained.

Hansi Flick couldn't ignore his formidable enforcer as Bayern cruised to the 2019–20 Bundesliga championship and dominated everyone in their path during a successful Champions League run.

Injuries would plague Goretzka during the following two seasons before Thomas Tuchel's arrival in 2023, who immediately attempted to offload him that summer. Bayern's leadership stood firm, but Goretzka's playing time diminished, which resulted in missing the 2024 European Championships on home soil.

However, this merely offered Goretzka the opportunity to showcase a level of determined resilience that will be equally appealing to potential clubs as his adaptability and scoring ability. Vincent Kompany initially mirrored Tuchel's skepticism toward the midfielder before being compelled to reintegrate him through Goretzka's sheer determination.

"Leon has consistently worked diligently, he's always shown hunger in training," the Belgian manager praised last year, presenting Goretzka as a model for the entire team. "It's beneficial for Leon and the other players. Leon displayed the proper response: through his performance, not through words."

United, despite their recent improvement under Carrick, don't possess a locker room filled with such determined characters.

Elliot Anderson

United's clear requirement in central midfield is a successor to the departing Casemiro. Ideally, that would have been Manuel Ugarte, the defensive anchor who excelled under Ruben Amorim at Sporting CP and was acquired for a fee potentially reaching £50.7 million ($69.8 million). Given the limited confidence Ugarte has generated among four different United managers so far, he appears not to be the answer.

Goretzka is naturally more attack-minded than Casemiro, suggesting his potential signing would complement one of the three primary targets United have been monitoring for months; Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton, and Brighton & Hove Albion's Carlos Baleba.

Anderson is perhaps the most well-rounded of the three, though it's challenging to determine whether his complete dominance of all aspects for Forest stems from his teammates' limitations or his exceptional ability. Certainly it's a combination, but his remarkable productivity won't be affordable—indeed, all three will likely demand fees approaching nine figures.

If United seeks a more budget-friendly alternative, perhaps to minimize risk should the expensive new signing fail to meet expectations, Stuttgart's Chema Andrés would be a fascinating choice. The tall 20-year-old is being gradually introduced to his debut senior season after departing Real Madrid's youth system but has shown excellent defensive awareness when utilized, extinguishing threats across the field before they can escalate.

The sole obstacle facing United is the existence of a buyback provision in his contract that Real Madrid can allegedly activate this summer.
