Newcastle United left back Lewis Hall sat at the top of Manchester United's transfer wishlist throughout the summer window, yet when everything was said and done, the only contract the Englishman put pen to was a new deal keeping him at St. James' Park until 2031 — a choice he called a "no-brainer."
Manchester United had identified Hall as their primary target to address the left-back position. The Red Devils, who also pursued a number of alternatives without success, were eager to capitalize on the notable talent drain from Newcastle, which included midfield pair Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães, Anthony Gordon, and head coach Eddie Howe.
Newcastle, however, had no intention of letting Hall follow suit. The defender has impressed since joining on loan from Chelsea in 2023, and the club ultimately retained him. According to Hall himself, new head coach Matthias Jaissle played a pivotal role in convincing him to stay.
"After not many conversations [with Jaissle]," Hall told Chronicle Live.
"Not many training sessions, I knew that the manager was going to be really good for this club and I knew that as a team, bringing in new players and improving the squad was really important and as soon as we did that, it was a no-brainer really to sign.
"He's a top guy. He's been so good to me," the left back added. "He gives me the license to express myself as long as I do the defensive work and do the running that's required for this position, which is quite a lot of work. But I'm happy to do it as long as it benefits the team. He's been a positive for everyone who's come in so far."

Newcastle sweetened the deal with improved terms and an additional two years, securing the 22-year-old England international's signature on a fresh contract with the 2026–27 Premier League campaign already in motion — a clear move to protect one of their most coveted assets.
The Magpies held firm as Manchester United continued to circle. Hall acknowledged that the transfer speculation didn't weigh on him, though he did admit that attracting interest from top clubs is always a welcome sign.
"I guess whenever you're linked to another team, you know that you're doing something right," Hall said. "I guess it's just a credit to your own performances and how you are as a player, how you are as a person.
"I took that as a positive, but at the same time, I knew how much I love playing here and I knew that since the manager came in, I knew the ambitions and what we wanted to achieve."
The Chelsea academy product has featured in all but one minute of Newcastle's first seven matches of the season across all competitions. He has already contributed two Premier League goal involvements, including the decisive strike against Hull City at the weekend, just before earning a recall to the England squad.

Despite committing to a new long-term deal on Tyneside, history is full of examples where players sign extensions only to depart shortly afterward.
Manchester United could reignite their pursuit in future transfer windows, and while Hall insists he envisions a lengthy stay at Newcastle, his long-term future will hinge on the club's ability to meet their sporting ambitions.
"I think when you're at a team you don't think too far into the future," Hall admitted. "Obviously, I'm really grateful for the contract that I've received and the trust that I've been given from the board and from the manager and everything like that.
"But I'm just taking it game by game, just trying to do the best I can for this club. We've got ambitions and as long as we achieve these ambitions and achieve what we want to achieve, I'm sure I'll be here for a long time."
Newcastle currently sit eighth in the Premier League table following two wins, two draws, and one defeat from their opening five league fixtures. Having competed in the Champions League the previous year, the Magpies failed to secure European football this time around after finishing 12th last season.
Another disappointing campaign could prompt Hall to weigh his options, with Manchester United and other elite clubs potentially emerging as attractive destinations.
