Manchester United face a significant defensive crisis heading into this weekend's crucial Premier League clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, with Harry Maguire set to miss out through suspension.
Maguire was charged with misconduct by the FA for directing abusive language toward the fourth official as he exited the pitch following his red card against Bournemouth. Having chosen not to contest the charge, it was upheld. The punishment, confirmed on Wednesday afternoon, consists of a one-match ban and a $40,722 (£30,000) fine, which comes on top of the initial suspension the defender has already completed.
Further complicating matters is Lisandro Martínez's red card in controversial circumstances against Leeds United on Monday evening. The Argentine center back was dismissed following a VAR review that identified a brief tug on Dominic Calvert-Lewin's hair during an aerial duel. While the contact was minimal, it technically constitutes violent conduct under the rules.
A violent conduct ban would keep Martínez sidelined for three matches, with any appeal unlikely to succeed. Michael Carrick described it as "one of the worst" calls he's ever witnessed. "It's not a pull, it's not a tug, it's not aggressive," the interim boss said in frustration.
Man Utd Left With Two Center Backs

With both Maguire and Martínez suspended, and Matthijs de Ligt still recovering from a back problem that has kept him out since December, United would be left with only the young pairing of Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven available to start at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.
Yoro is the more experienced of the two at 20 years old, while Heaven is still a teenager. Both are promising defenders, but their limited experience at this level is an obvious concern.
Heaven hasn't featured from the start in any competition since January 7, when United played out a draw with Burnley under caretaker boss Darren Fletcher. Yoro has seen considerably more action of late, starting regularly alongside Maguire during a period when Martínez was sidelined through injury.
Heaven and Yoro have previously lined up together in defense, though only within a back three and never as a straight central defensive partnership.
Man Utd's Center Back Depth
Player | Age | Status |
|---|---|---|
Leny Yoro | 20 | Fit |
Ayden Heaven | 19 | Fit |
Harry Maguire | 33 | Suspended |
Lisandro Martínez | 28 | Suspended |
Matthijs de Ligt | 26 | Injured |
Casemiro Solution Not Ideal

Rather than trusting a center-back pairing with a combined age of just 39, Carrick does have the option of deploying Casemiro in a defensive role.
The experienced Brazilian memorably dropped into defense during the 2023–24 campaign when Maguire, Martínez, and Raphaël Varane were all unavailable at various points. It isn't his natural position, but he is capable of filling in. The drawback, however, is the knock-on effect it would have on the midfield.
Removing Casemiro from the center of the pitch, where he has been an influential figure in recent months, is one concern. Finding adequate cover for his absence in that area is another challenge entirely.
As things stand, United lack the midfield depth to absorb such a change without feeling the effects. Kobbie Mainoo sat out the Leeds game with a minor knock and remains a doubt for the Chelsea fixture for now.
That would leave Manuel Ugarte as the only senior central midfielder available. Bruno Fernandes is certainly capable of operating in a No. 8 role, but his performances as a more advanced No. 10 have been a key driver behind United's improved form and consistency in the second half of the season.
To avoid restricting Fernandes, Carrick might otherwise have to turn to teenage twins Jack or Tyler Fletcher to fill the void. In a worst-case scenario, right back Noussair Mazraoui could also be considered for a midfield role, having performed there previously under Erik ten Hag.
What's the Consequence of Chelsea vs. Man Utd?

The outcome at Stamford Bridge could prove highly consequential. Third-placed United currently hold a seven-point lead over sixth-placed Chelsea in the Premier League table, a gap that would extend to 10 points with a victory in west London.
A top-five finish will be sufficient for Champions League qualification due to the Premier League securing an additional European Performance Spot. Should United claim all three points, Chelsea could potentially slip out of the top six and fall as low as 10th, provided Brentford, Everton, Brighton & Hove Albion and Sunderland all win their respective games.
A defeat at Stamford Bridge would not be catastrophic, but it would reduce United's buffer over Chelsea to just four points. The Champions League place would still be theirs to surrender, though the margin for error across the remaining five fixtures would be considerably tighter in that scenario.
