Man Utd's Bold Blueprint to Revamp Their Midfield as Transfer Uncertainty Looms

Manchester United still have decisions to make in the closing weeks of the transfer window, with multiple positions yet to be addressed before the summer deadline arrives.

Approximately $114 million (£85 million) has already been spent on midfield additions Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, while backup goalkeeper Karl Darlow has also arrived on a free transfer.

It had widely been reported that signing up to three central midfielders was the priority, accounting for Casemiro's recent departure and the thin squad depth from last season. Beyond that, a left back, left winger, and a striker have also been identified as targets.

United appeared to distance themselves from moves for Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali earlier this summer—both of whom ultimately joined Tottenham Hotspur in a combined deal worth $249 million (£185 million)—citing financial concerns and a lack of the same strong desire to move to Old Trafford that Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Šeško had shown at this point last year.

With a return to the Champions League on the horizon, where squad depth will be essential, making the most of the remaining budget to address as many target positions as possible appears to be the sensible approach.

According to The Athletic, however, this may now come at the cost of a third midfield signing. It is "no longer certain" that another player—with the likes of Carlos Baleba, Aurélien Tchouaméni, and Manu Koné linked to a defensive-minded central role—will be brought in.

Instead, the club is reportedly reconsidering "where to next put their resources" in the transfer market.

Newcastle United's Lewis Hall may be out of reach financially at left back, though several other options are likely available at a lower price point. The left winger question may only be resolved once clarity emerges around Marcus Rashford's future at the club.

United would arguably benefit more from signing a seasoned backup and cover option for Šeško in the striker role rather than a direct young rival for the 23-year-old—someone in the mold of Jean-Philippe Mateta. Dušan Vlahović, 26, also remains a free agent following his departure from Juventus.

How Man Utd Can Solve Midfield Puzzle Without Another Signing

With Manuel Ugarte sidelined for an extended period, United currently have Santos and Tielemans to partner Kobbie Mainoo in midfield. Tielemans and Mainoo share similar qualities as composed, intelligent playmakers, while Santos is regarded as a reliable presence in possession—lacking the same sharpness but offering strong running ability and solid defensive cover.

None of them truly replicate the destructive qualities that Casemiro brought to the side.

One option being considered for a fourth central midfield role—before turning to promising academy product Tyler Fletcher—is Mason Mount. The 27-year-old has featured in deeper positions during preseason than the No. 10 or wide forward roles he has traditionally occupied, though he is far from a like-for-like Casemiro replacement.

Now more seasoned and experienced, his profile could suit a more permanent shift into that deeper role if required—though the obvious concern remains his injury record, having managed just 32 starts across all competitions over three years and spending an estimated 394 days on the treatment table during that period.
