Man Utd's Dream Manager Hunt Takes Devastating Turn as Top Target Slips Away

Manchester United's aspirations to appoint Thomas Tuchel as their new head coach have been dashed following his commitment to a fresh deal with England, which Football Association CEO Mark Bullingham states was unaffected by the Red Devils' persistent interest.

Tuchel was previously contracted with England through this summer's World Cup but secured a new two-year extension on Thursday, crushing United's ambitions of reviving their pursuit that featured two separate discussion rounds with the German coach during 2024.

Following Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS's arrival at Old Trafford in early 2024, they were eager to establish their influence immediately.

The status of then-manager Erik ten Hag became uncertain as club leadership conducted a notable end-of-season assessment of the Dutchman's role, which involved discussions with numerous potential successors to decide whether Ten Hag should be dismissed.

Tuchel was included among those who met with United, though reports indicate he was dissatisfied with the framework of an Old Trafford leadership structure that was still establishing itself.

United approached him again months later when their choice to keep Ten Hag with a new deal backfired spectacularly. The circumstances appeared favorable until Tuchel accepted the England manager position instead.

With Tuchel's previous agreement set to conclude this summer, it appeared probable that United would again seek discussions with the former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain boss, but that opportunity has now been definitively shut.

Per ESPN, England administrators worried about losing Tuchel following the World Cup, when several top-tier clubs might join United in seeking a new manager, and moved swiftly to secure his extended commitment.

Nevertheless, Bullingham was swift to deny this when questioned whether United's pursuit of Tuchel influenced their decision to offer a new contract.

"The discussion developed organically after we secured qualification," the FA chief responded. "From our perspective, it's simply a natural progression. We sensed he was genuinely enjoying his role.

"He's truly embraced working in international football. The preparation time available between matches for planning, I believe he's found that aspect rewarding, and has embraced that particular challenge."

Bullingham continued: "When examining anyone in any profession on a temporary contract, obviously as they approach the conclusion of that agreement, they're already contemplating their next steps.

"From our standpoint, we recognized we had an exceptional coach performing excellently for us and we desired his continued service."
