Man Utd's Midfield Revolution: How Tchouameni Could Transform Their Lineup

Manchester United fans are becoming increasingly frustrated.

The need to strengthen Michael Carrick's midfield is evident, with the club's return to Champions League football perhaps fueling expectations that the Red Devils could attract any player they want this summer.

Yet they've already watched one key target slip away. Tottenham Hotspur, driven by urgency and a desire to satisfy Roberto De Zerbi, secured Mateus Fernandes as part of a sweeping midfield overhaul, spending a staggering £185 million ($247 million) in the process.

The Red Devils are widely expected to acquire Atalanta's dynamic box-to-box midfielder Éderson, though the Brazilian alone won't be enough. Man Utd require considerably more to offset Casemiro's exit and build upon the encouraging foundations laid during the early stages of Carrick's reign.

Despite losing out on Fernandes, a lengthy list of potential targets remains, stretching from Alex Scott to Ayyoub Bouaddi.

Nevertheless, one standout name dominates the wishlist. Real Madrid would be making a mistake by letting go of Aurélien Tchouaméni, who, per AS, has no desire to leave but could be forced out should Los Blancos receive an irresistible offer from Manchester.

One thing is certain — United's midfield would be significantly more formidable with Tchouaméni anchoring the center. Here's what their best possible lineup could look like with the Frenchman involved.

Having revamped their attack last season, Man Utd's most pressing area of need this summer is central midfield. The club may also look to add depth in goal, at the back, and along the flanks.

With Éderson set to cost around £38.85 million ($52 million), United could still have the financial room to pursue Tchouaméni, who is reportedly available for £77 million ($103 million) — a relative bargain given today's inflated transfer market.

The France international is a commanding ball-winning midfielder who was brought in to fill Casemiro's shoes at Real Madrid four years ago. The version of the Brazilian who recently departed was a different player to Casemiro at his peak, and there's little doubt that Tchouaméni would represent a significant step up from the 34-year-old, who appeared to show his age at the World Cup.

That said, Casemiro managed to draw the best out of Kobbie Mainoo during a resurgent final season at Old Trafford, even if his eagerness to get involved in attacking areas often left him caught out of position.

Éderson isn't quite ready to immediately push Mainoo out of the starting XI, and the young Englishman actually complements Tchouaméni very well. Mainoo brings ball-carrying ability, creativity and ingenuity, while the Madrid man provides the necessary defensive solidity and the capacity to break lines with incisive passes. Together, they could forge an outstanding partnership, with Éderson and potentially Chelsea's Andrey Santos providing valuable backup.

While Carrick leaned heavily on a 4-2-3-1 system at the outset of his second interim stint, Tchouaméni is talented enough to operate as a lone pivot. That could prompt Carrick to deploy two box-to-box midfielders ahead of him, with Éderson ideally suited to that role and Bruno Fernandes far too influential to leave out.
